“THERE’S NEVER A GOOD TIME TO FIRE AN 86-YEAR-OLD…” — SIR TOM JONES REJECTS REPORTED OFFER TO RETURN TO THE VOICE UK

“THERE’S NEVER A GOOD TIME TO FIRE AN 86-YEAR-OLD…” — SIR TOM JONES REJECTS REPORTED OFFER TO RETURN TO THE VOICE UK
After more than a decade connected to the singing competition, the legendary Welsh singer has made his feelings clear about being dropped as a full-time coach. Now, reports say he has turned down an offer to return in a reduced role.
Sir Tom Jones has reportedly rejected an offer to return to The Voice UK as a guest judge, following his departure from the coaching panel after years of helping aspiring singers find their voices.
The 86-year-old music legend had been one of the programme’s most recognisable faces since its launch in 2012. His powerful voice, straight-talking advice and unmistakable personality made him a familiar presence in the famous red chair.
But the next series will move forward with a new line-up, leaving many longtime viewers disappointed by the departure of one of the show’s veteran coaches.
“I did not want to leave”
Sir Tom publicly addressed the decision in September, making it clear that leaving the programme had not been his choice.
He explained that ITV had made the decision and said the reason initially given to him involved financial difficulties relating to insurance. He also referred to reports that the show wanted to refresh its coaching line-up.
The singer revealed that he had been offered a much-reduced role involving an appearance without being involved from the beginning of the competition.
He made no secret of his disappointment, adding: “There’s never a good time to fire an 86-year-old who’s still pretty good at his job.”
His words quickly drew attention from fans who felt his experience and contribution to the programme deserved recognition.
A reported offer he was unwilling to accept
According to a report published by The Sun on October 16, Sir Tom has now declined the proposed guest-judge position.
The reported offer would have allowed him to appear on the programme occasionally rather than serve as a full-time coach throughout the series.
The report suggests that the reduced role was not what the veteran performer wanted. However, the details of the latest offer have not been independently confirmed by ITV.
A spokesperson for The Voice UK previously said the programme had loved working with Sir Tom and that discussions about possible future involvement had continued with him and his team.
A new chapter for The Voice UK
ITV has confirmed a major shake-up for the programme’s 15th series, scheduled to air in 2027.
Cheryl and rapper Aitch are set to join the coaching panel alongside Kelly Rowland and will.i.am. Alesha Dixon and Stacey Solomon will take over presenting duties.
The changes mark a significant new chapter for the competition, which has featured a succession of well-known artists since its debut.
For many viewers, however, Sir Tom’s absence will be one of the most noticeable changes.
A legacy that goes beyond one television show
Sir Tom Jones has enjoyed a music career spanning more than six decades, with hits including It’s Not Unusual and Delilah. His work on The Voice UK introduced his experience and musical knowledge to a new generation of performers.
Although the reported guest-judge offer may have been intended to keep him connected to the programme, his public comments suggest that remaining involved in a limited capacity was not the same as continuing the role he had held for years.
Whether he will appear on the show in another capacity remains uncertain.
For now, the singer’s departure has become one of the most discussed changes surrounding the next series — and a reminder that even familiar television partnerships can come to an end.
