TWO TOP BARRISTERS APPOINTED IN MARK CAIN CASE — NEW DEVELOPMENT AFTER THE DEATH OF DR HANNAH TERRY

TWO TOP BARRISTERS APPOINTED IN MARK CAIN CASE — NEW DEVELOPMENT AFTER THE DEATH OF DR HANNAH TERRY
The prosecution of Mark Cain, charged with the murder of his wife, Norfolk GP Dr Hannah Cain, known professionally as Dr Hannah Terry, is moving forward. Two experienced barristers have now been instructed as the case prepares for its next court hearing.
The case surrounding the death of a respected Norfolk doctor has entered another stage following the appointment of Christopher Paxton KC and Steven Ball to prosecute Mark Cain.
The barristers were instructed by the Crown Prosecution Service’s East of England team on October 14, 2026, according to Red Lion Chambers.
Dr Hannah Cain, 45, was found unresponsive at the couple’s home in Dersingham, Norfolk, in the early hours of Sunday, October 4. Her husband, Mark Cain, 45, was subsequently charged with her murder and remains in custody as proceedings continue. <Cite refs={[“turn644805search0″,”turn644805search2”]}/>
TWO EXPERIENCED BARRISTERS JOIN THE PROSECUTION
Christopher Paxton KC is a senior barrister with extensive experience in serious criminal cases, including homicide prosecutions. Steven Ball is also an experienced criminal barrister who has handled complex cases.
Their appointment marks a procedural development as prosecutors prepare the case for the next stages of court proceedings.
However, the appointment does not establish the outcome of the case. The prosecution must present its evidence through the legal process, and Cain remains entitled to a fair trial.
WHAT THE COURT HAS HEARD SO FAR
At an earlier hearing, prosecutors outlined the circumstances in which Dr Hannah was found.
Emergency services attended the family home after an ambulance call at approximately 2:25 a.m. on October 4. Dr Hannah was found unconscious and unresponsive in an upstairs bedroom.
A post-mortem examination recorded blunt-force injuries to the head and neck injuries consistent with compression, according to details presented in court.
Prosecutors also said children were present at the property at the time. The full circumstances surrounding Dr Hannah’s death have not yet been established through a trial.
WHO WAS DR HANNAH TERRY?
Known professionally as Dr Hannah Terry, she worked as a general practitioner at Grimston Medical Centre and also operated a cosmetics business.
Her family described her as “kind, generous and loving,” paying tribute to her as a devoted mother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend. They also praised the care she provided to her patients.
Her death has deeply affected her family, colleagues and the wider medical community. The practice temporarily closed following the news, reflecting the difficult circumstances facing staff.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
Mark Cain appeared at King’s Lynn Crown Court on October 8 and was remanded in custody. A plea hearing was provisionally scheduled for December 3, 2026, at Norwich Crown Court. A trial date had not been set in the reports reviewed.
As the case progresses, the court will consider the evidence and determine the legal issues before it. The appointment of the prosecution team is one step in that process, rather than a conclusion about what happened.
For Dr Hannah’s family, friends, colleagues and patients, the proceedings unfold alongside profound grief. Many questions surrounding her final hours remain unanswered publicly, and the coming stages of the case will be closely watched.
For now, the focus remains on the evidence, the court process and remembering Dr Hannah for the life she lived and the care she gave to others.
