A 12-YEAR-OLD BOY BECAME HIS MUM’S HERO AFTER SHE COLLAPSED BEHIND THE WHEEL AT 60MPH
When his mum suddenly lost consciousness while driving, young Zac Howells faced a terrifying moment no child should ever have to experience. But his quick thinking helped prevent a potentially devastating crash — and saved both their lives.
A routine car journey turned into a life-threatening emergency when 12-year-old Zac Howells was travelling with his mum, Nicola Crump, on the A40 in Herefordshire, England.
The pair were heading from their home in Ebbw Vale, Wales, towards a Christmas market in Warwickshire when Nicola began feeling unwell.
She told Zac that she felt hot and needed to pull over. But before she could safely deal with the situation, she lost consciousness behind the wheel.
With the car still in drive, her foot remained on the accelerator. The vehicle began moving back towards the dual carriageway, putting both mother and son — as well as other road users — in serious danger.
A TERRIFYING MOMENT THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
Zac realised something was terribly wrong when he looked at his mum and saw that she was unconscious.
He tried to wake her, but she did not respond.
Despite being only 12 years old and frightened by what was happening, Zac understood that he needed to act quickly.
He reached across, took control of the steering wheel and guided the moving car towards the central reservation, bringing it to a stop. He then switched off the engine and called 999 for emergency assistance.
During the call, Zac explained what had happened and used the car’s navigation system to help identify their location.
His calmness and quick thinking were remarkable under such frightening circumstances.
“HE LITERALLY SAVED OUR LIVES”
Emergency responders arrived to assist the pair. Thankfully, neither Zac nor Nicola suffered injuries in the incident.
Nicola was later found to have extremely low blood pressure, and she faced further medical assessment following the frightening episode.
For Nicola, the experience was deeply emotional. Her son had been placed in a situation no child should have to face, yet he had acted when she could not help herself.
She praised Zac for his bravery, describing him as a remarkable son who had protected not only them but potentially other people travelling on the road that day.
Zac later reflected on the experience, explaining that he had been scared but knew he had to do something.
His actions were not about seeking recognition. In the middle of an emergency, he was focused on getting his mum to safety.
A YOUNG HERO RECOGNISED FOR HIS COURAGE
Zac’s bravery did not go unnoticed.
In January 2026, he received a Chief Constable’s Commendation from West Mercia Police in recognition of his exceptional courage and quick thinking.
He was also named a 2026 Pride of Britain Child of Courage award winner, receiving wider recognition for the actions that helped prevent a potentially catastrophic accident.
For a young boy who had simply set out on a journey with his mum, the experience became a moment that would change both their lives.
A MOTHER AND SON WHO WERE GIVEN ANOTHER CHANCE
Behind the awards and headlines is a deeply personal story about a mother and her child — and the extraordinary things Zac did when the person he depended on suddenly needed him most.
Nicola and Zac were fortunate to walk away from the incident unharmed. Their story is also a powerful reminder of how quickly an ordinary day can turn into an emergency, and how important it is for families to talk about what to do when something goes wrong.
Zac may be young, but his actions showed extraordinary courage, presence of mind and love for his mum.
Sometimes, heroes do not wear uniforms or have years of training. Sometimes, they are just 12 years old, sitting in the passenger seat, terrified — but brave enough to act when it matters most.
