TRAGIC HOLIDAY NIGHT: BRITISH SOFTWARE ENGINEER, 25, DIES AFTER FALLING FROM SIXTH-FLOOR HOTEL BALCONY IN MALTA

An inquest heard how a night out with friends ended in tragedy for Kieran Hughes, whose family described him as “a legend and a genius” as they continue to cope with their devastating loss.

A young British holidaymaker died after falling approximately 80 feet from a hotel balcony in Malta following a night out with friends, an inquest has heard.

Kieran Thomas Hughes, 25, from North Wales, was staying at the Cavalieri Art Hotel in St Julian’s when the tragic incident occurred in the early hours of July 11, 2025.

The software engineer had spent the evening with his friend Osian Jones, visiting a restaurant, a casino and a nightclub while drinking beer, cocktails and limoncello.

The pair returned to their hotel at around 3:30 a.m. CCTV footage reportedly showed them supporting one another as they made their way back, suggesting they were heavily intoxicated.

Less than an hour later, at approximately 4:15 a.m., Hughes fell from the sixth-floor balcony.

During an inquest at Caernarfon Coroner’s Court in October 2026, evidence revealed that Hughes had left the hotel room wearing only his boxer shorts.

His friend was asleep and reportedly too intoxicated to wake when the incident occurred.

Emergency services were called after Hughes was found on the ground outside the hotel. Despite the response, he could not be saved.

A post-mortem examination found that he died from multiple injuries caused by blunt-force trauma following the fall.

Toxicology evidence also showed a substantial level of alcohol in his system.

CORONER CONCLUDES DEATH WAS ACCIDENTAL

The inquest heard there was no evidence of another person being involved in Hughes’s fall. Investigators also found no indication of a confrontation between the two friends.

Coroner Elizabeth Dudley-Jones concluded that Hughes’s death was accidental.

She reportedly considered the possibility that he had gone onto the balcony because he felt unwell or wanted some fresh air, without fully realising the danger. However, the precise circumstances leading to the fall could not be established with certainty.

The hearing brought painful details to light for Hughes’s family, who have endured months of uncertainty and grief since his death.

Hughes’s family remembered him as a talented young man with a promising future ahead of him.

His father, Alan Hughes, spoke of the family’s continuing heartbreak, describing the emotional toll of losing his son and navigating the aftermath of the tragedy abroad.

Friends also paid tribute to Hughes, remembering his intelligence, personality and the impact he had on those around him.

At just 25, he had been building a career as a software engineer, with many years of life and opportunities seemingly ahead of him.

His death has left his family and friends facing a loss that cannot be undone.

The inquest has now established that his death was accidental, but for those who loved him, the pain of losing a young man with so much potential remains.
