‘HE WAS A HERO TO SO MANY’: PARAMEDIC DIES AFTER CARDIAC ARREST ON DUTY AS SON PAYS HEARTBREAKING TRIBUTE
Tim Sands dedicated nearly 40 years to helping people in their most vulnerable moments. After his sudden passing, his final act of generosity has given three people a new chance at life.
A devoted paramedic who spent almost four decades helping others has died after suffering a cardiac arrest while on duty, leaving his family, friends and colleagues heartbroken.
Tim Sands, who worked with East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) and was based at Skegness Ambulance Station in Lincolnshire, passed away on Friday, October 23, 2026.
His death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from the people who knew him, worked alongside him and witnessed the difference he made throughout his career.
But amid the grief, his family has found comfort in one remarkable part of his legacy: through organ donation, Tim has helped give three people a new lease on life.
‘THAT WAS THE MAN AND THE HERO I KNEW’
Tim’s son, Luke, paid an emotional tribute to his father, describing a man whose commitment to helping others extended far beyond his working hours.
Luke said his father had dedicated almost 40 years to supporting people during their most difficult moments. The family, he explained, was proud that Tim had continued to help others even after his passing.
Knowing that his organs had helped three people was a source of comfort during an otherwise devastating time.
Luke also expressed gratitude for the messages of support and the memories shared by Tim’s colleagues. Their kindness, he said, had helped the family through the first painful days of their loss.
For Luke, Tim was not simply an experienced paramedic. He was the father he had known and admired for 27 years—a man whose compassion and service had shaped the lives of countless people.
A CAREER SPENT HELPING OTHERS
Tim first joined the ambulance service in 1988, beginning his career as an ambulance technician before progressing to become a paramedic.
Over the years, he responded to emergencies, performed CPR and helped deliver babies, supporting patients and families during some of the most stressful moments of their lives.
His colleagues at Skegness Ambulance Station remembered him as someone who understood that every call involved a person who needed help, a family seeking reassurance or someone whose life depended on a quick response.
In a tribute, they described his impact on the community and the countless people he had helped throughout his career.
They also remembered the lighter side of his personality, including his affection for cats and his willingness to stop and give them attention.
That small detail captured something his colleagues treasured about him: behind the uniform was a warm, caring person who found time for kindness in everyday life.
A MUCH-LOVED HUSBAND, FATHER AND GRANDFATHER
Away from work, Tim shared 30 years with his beloved wife, Dawn. He also leaves behind his son, Luke, and his treasured grandson, Blake.
He was a much-loved twin brother to Chris and a brother to Jim, Sarah and Liz.
His family remembered him as a devoted family man whose love, humour and generosity will remain part of their lives.
A fundraising appeal has been launched by his niece, Heather Webster, to help Dawn and Luke with funeral expenses and essential bills during this difficult period.
The appeal also highlighted Tim’s love of animals, particularly cats, and his lifelong dedication to caring for others.
The family hopes the fundraiser will ease some of the practical pressures they face while they grieve.
HIS FINAL GIFT WILL LIVE ON
For those who worked with Tim, his legacy can be seen in the people he helped throughout nearly four decades in the ambulance service.
For his family, it now includes three people whose lives have been changed through his organ donation.
East Midlands Ambulance Service colleagues and senior staff also paid tribute to his professionalism, compassion and warmth, describing him as a respected colleague who would be deeply missed.
Tim’s story is a reminder that a life devoted to helping others can leave a lasting impact in ways both large and small.
He spent years answering calls for help when people needed him most. In his final act of generosity, that spirit of service continued.
Rest peacefully, Tim Sands. Your years of service, kindness and love will not be forgotten. 🕊️
