LIVING WITH SACRAL AGENESIS AND LOSING HALF HER BODY AS A CHILD, ROSEMARY DEFIED EVERY EXPECTATION TO BUILD A FAMILY AND A LIFE FULL OF STRENGTH

Due to a rare disorder, she lost half of her body as a child! Despite this, American Rosemary Siggins found a 180-centimeter-tall husband and, despite the doctors’ warnings, gave birth to two healthy children.

She could have cried her whole life about how cruel fate had been to her. But 39-year-old American Rosemary Siggins from Pueblo, Colorado, decided otherwise. Although a disease called sacral agenesis deprived her of half of her body at the age of two, she lives a completely normal life!

The disorder that Rosemary was born with causes huge abnormalities in her spine. That’s why doctors had to amputate half of her body when she was a little toddler, so she now measures only seventy-five centimeters.

The biggest problem, of course, was how little Rose would move. At first, she learned to walk on her hands, but eventually she discovered the magic of the skateboard, which she still uses to move around today. “It’s indispensable to me, thanks to it I don’t depend on anyone and I feel completely free,” says Rose.

At the age of six, she tried prosthetics, but they didn’t suit her at all. “I couldn’t stand them, I hated them, everything about them hurt. I still remember how upset my teachers were when they saw my prosthetics thrown away in the corner and watched me skateboard down the school hallway,” Rose laughs.

But her teenage years weren’t easy at all. She went through a period when she was afraid she would never find a boyfriend or have a family of her own. She eventually trained as a car mechanic and at the age of twenty-two, she came to terms with the fact that she would have to fight her way through life alone.

But in 1997, she met Dave Siggins from the auto parts store where she regularly shopped. The young man, who was 6 feet tall, immediately caught her eye. “But the attraction was mutual. He treated me like any other woman, and even told me I was beautiful,” Rosemary recalls. But after a year of dating, they were in for a big shock – Rose got pregnant!

Although Rose and Dave had a normal sex life, neither of them had considered the possibility of her getting pregnant. Sacral agenesis also causes damage to the reproductive system, among other things. “I went to the doctor who recommended an abortion. He said that no one with sacral agenesis could carry a child to term, that the fetus was a threat to my internal organs,” explains Rosemary, who refused to have an abortion.

The fact that she got pregnant was proof to Rose that nothing was impossible. “The pregnancy was completely uneventful, and in January 1999, I gave birth by cesarean section to a beautiful and healthy baby boy, whom we named Luke,” Rosemary recalls.

When her son was six years old, Rose got pregnant again. She was expecting a girl and didn’t even think about the possibility that it might not work out. But her second pregnancy was much more complicated. “I was bleeding, had trouble breathing, and had a lot of abdominal pain. The baby was destroying me from the inside, so during the second birth, the doctors had to remove my gallbladder and appendix by cesarean section,” recalls Rosemary, who claims that her daughter Shelby was definitely worth the pain.

Today, Rosemary is the happy mother of two healthy children, who she drives to school every day in a specially modified car. To prevent her children from being teased by their classmates, she regularly meets with their friends and their parents. Her reward is that she is said to be cool in the eyes of her children and their peers! “My daughter once told me that her friends and I were having a competition outside to see who had the best mom. They said I won because I ride a skateboard and can fix a car. That way, I beat the moms who bake cookies and cakes every day,” Rose laughs.

Although her health has deteriorated significantly in recent years, she has no regrets. “I can’t work as a car mechanic anymore. I feel like my hands and arms are going away, and I’m afraid I’ll end up in a wheelchair. But I’ve overcome everything fate has thrown my way, I’ve overcome all obstacles, and I live a happy life. I’m grateful to have two wonderful children and a loving husband. But I’ve also finally been able to admit to myself that I’m not superwoman,” Rose says.
