RARE AMNIOTIC BAND SYNDROME LEFT BABY DAMIEN FACING 18 SURGERIES BUT HIS FAMILY NEVER STOPPED BELIEVING

What should have been the beginning of a simple family life became the start of an extraordinary journey for Anastasia and Matthew Wong when their son, Damien, entered the world with a rare congenital condition.
Damien was born with Amniotic Band Syndrome, an uncommon disorder that affected several parts of his body before birth. He was born blind, with a cleft lip and palate, a deformed nose, and webbed fingers—challenges that would shape the very beginning of his life.

From the moment they first held their baby boy, his parents knew the road ahead would be far from easy.
Doctors explained that Damien would likely need around 18 surgeries throughout his childhood and beyond, each one designed to improve his health, comfort, and quality of life.
Yet despite the overwhelming news, giving up was never part of the family’s plan.

Instead, every milestone has become another reason to keep moving forward.
Even before Damien was born, Anastasia began traveling to Los Angeles to receive specialized medical care. Since then, the family has made the long journey several times, determined to give their son access to the treatment he needs.
This May will mark their fifth trip to Los Angeles, where Damien is scheduled to undergo his third surgery—a procedure to repair his cleft palate.

For the Wong family, each hospital visit represents another step toward the future they dream of for their little boy.
But those journeys come at a significant cost.
The family expects to remain in Los Angeles for seven weeks, facing mounting expenses for travel, temporary accommodation, medical care, and everyday living while Damien recovers.
“Every trip brings hope,” the family shared. “We celebrate every small victory because each surgery is another chance to help Damien live the fullest life possible.”

Despite the uncertainty that still lies ahead, Damien continues to inspire those around him with his quiet resilience.
His parents know there are many more operations to come, but they remain focused on one goal: giving their son every opportunity to thrive.
“Our journey is far from over,” they said. “There will be more surgeries, more hospital visits, and more challenges. But every smile from Damien reminds us why we keep going. He’s worth every mile, every sacrifice, and every moment.”
