12-Year-Old Boy Rescued by His Brother After Shark Attack on Family Vacation: ‘I Could See My Bone’

A 12-year-old boy from Friendswood, Texas, is recovering after surviving a terrifying shark attack during a family vacation in the Bahamas — thanks to the quick actions of his older brother.
On Tuesday, June 23, Parker Roll was swimming with his brother Jack during a boat tour in Staniel Cay, Exuma, about 60 miles offshore. The brothers noticed what they initially thought was a large rock or a harmless nurse shark near a canal lined with mangroves.

Moments later, an 8- to 10-foot shark attacked Parker. “I looked down and I could see my bone,” Parker recalled. “It just felt like a knife stabbing over and over, then twisting.” The clear blue water quickly turned murky red from the blood.
Jack immediately sprang into action. He removed his brother’s swimsuit and used it as a makeshift tourniquet to stem the bleeding while warning others in the water about the shark. With no cell service and far from help, Jack knew they had to act fast: “It’s either we help him or nobody can really help him.”

A boat crew eventually reached them and transported Parker to safety. He later received around 1,000 stitches on his leg at the hospital. Doctors expect him to make a full recovery, though he is currently unable to walk.
Parker later reflected on the ordeal: “I didn’t lose my leg, but there was a high possibility if I kept bleeding and it wasn’t stopped. I’m also glad I didn’t just bleed out there — especially when you’re that far offshore.”

The family is grateful for Jack’s bravery and the rapid response from the tour crew and emergency services. The Exumas, known for their stunning beaches and popular snorkeling spots, are home to numerous shark species, though attacks remain relatively rare.
This story highlights both the dangers of open-water adventures and the incredible bond between siblings. Wishing Parker a speedy recovery!
