A grieving mother is sharing her heartbreaking story in the hope of finding answers after losing the baby she had fought so hard to protect.

Nicole Humphrey was just under six months pregnant when her water unexpectedly broke in late May, turning what had been an exciting pregnancy into weeks of uncertainty.

Having recently lost her job and her health insurance, Nicole was admitted to a public hospital, where she remained on medical bed rest for nearly three weeks while doctors closely monitored her pregnancy.

Despite the unexpected complications, her baby boy continued to show encouraging signs. Nicole says his heartbeat remained strong, and each kick gave her hope that they would make it through the difficult weeks ahead.

Throughout her hospital stay, however, Nicole says she struggled with several challenges related to her care.

She recalls being placed on a diabetic meal plan despite not having diabetes and receiving frequent iron supplements that caused severe digestive problems. After repeatedly asking for help and advocating for herself, she says adjustments were eventually made.

Even through the discomfort, Nicole remained focused on one thing—keeping her son safe.

Then, on June 25, everything changed.

According to Nicole, the morning began with reassuring news. Her baby’s heartbeat was normal, and she believed both of them were stable.

Later that day, she says she was given medication she believed was intended to treat nausea. Within minutes, she experienced an unusual metallic taste in her mouth and began feeling seriously unwell.

Nicole believes she may have received the wrong medication, though the exact circumstances have not been confirmed.

About an hour later, doctors could no longer detect her baby boy’s heartbeat.

Later that day, Nicole delivered her son, leaving her family overwhelmed by grief.

Now, as she mourns the loss of the child she had spent weeks fighting to protect, Nicole says she is searching for answers about what happened during those final hours.

To better understand the circumstances surrounding her baby’s passing, she hopes to arrange an independent autopsy. The procedure, however, costs approximately $2,500—an amount she says she cannot afford on her own.

Adding to the urgency, Nicole says she has only a limited amount of time to authorize the examination before the opportunity to gather additional information may no longer be available.

“I did everything I could to protect my little boy,” Nicole shared. “He kept fighting, and I never stopped believing we would bring him home.”

“Right now, all I want is to understand what happened. If there are answers, I want to find them—for my son, for our family, and for peace of mind.”

As Nicole continues to navigate unimaginable grief, she says her greatest hope is simply to learn the truth about the little boy she was so eagerly waiting to meet.
