Ella Beatty Channels Ax Murderer Lizzie Borden in Bloody Monster Season 4 Trailer

The Monster saga is analyzing another infamous true-crime figure. On Tuesday, Aug. 11, Netflix debuted the first teaser trailer for Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story, showing Ella Beatty as accused ax murderer Lizzie Borden in the fourth installment of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s series.

Borden’s story marks a major milestone for the saga, as hers is the first tale to center a woman.

Beatty told Netflix’s Tudum she’s thrilled to bring Borden’s story to audiences, and honored to have been given the chance to “examine an American crime that feels almost mythic in proportion.”

“This season gives us our first female Monster and delves into female rage and repression which I’ve found to feel strikingly relevant,” Beatty said. “I cannot wait to share it with the world.”

The late Massachusetts woman, widely suspected of killing her parents in 1892, was never actually convicted of the crimes. Still her story inspired countless macabre tales, including the grisly playground rhyme that is heard in the trailer.

“When the repressed daughter of a wealthy New England family and her rebellious maid find themselves trapped in a house built on humiliation and cruelty, they escape into a fantasy of sex, power and revenge,” the series’ logline reads.

It continues, “The gruesome unsolved murders that follow don’t just shock the world — they give birth to an icon who refuses to live imprisoned in a cage, choosing instead to forge her own legend: shocking, monstrous and gloriously free.”

The first installment followed the life, crimes and death of notorious murderer Jeffrey Dahmer, while the second told the tale of brothers Erik and Lyle Menendez, who were convicted of killing their parents.

Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story, which will have eight episodes, debuts on Netflix Sept. 17.
