Steven Schwally sentenced to 25 years to life for fatal crash at Deer Park nail salon

Steven Schwally, 66, a resident of Deer Park, New York, has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for a fatal 2024 crash that killed four people at a Long Island nail salon.

The sentence was handed down on August 12, 2026, following Schwally’s conviction earlier that year.

The tragedy occurred on June 28, 2024, when Schwally drove his SUV at approximately 78 mph (126 km/h) and crashed directly into the Hawaii Nail & Spa in Deer Park.

The horrific collision claimed the lives of four people:

Jian Chai Chen, the salon owner

Yan Xu, a salon employee

Meizi Zhang, a salon employee

Emilia Rennhack, an off-duty NYPD police officer

Nine other people were also injured in the crash.

Investigators determined Schwally’s blood alcohol content to be 0.17%, more than double the legal limit for driving in New York. The combination of excessive speed and alcohol turned the SUV into a lethal weapon as it plowed into the business.

In June 2026, a jury found Schwally guilty of four counts of second-degree murder, along with multiple other charges related to the crash.

The victims’ families have spent more than two years grappling with the devastating aftermath of the collision. The loss of the four individuals—a small business owner, two employees, and a police officer—deeply shook the Deer Park community. This sentence marks a significant legal milestone in the case.
