FROM WATERFRONT LUXURY TO A JAIL CELL: GRANDfather FACES CHARGES AFTER FATAL BOAT CRASH

A summer evening on New Jersey’s Barnegat Bay ended in tragedy when a 30-foot boat crashed into a channel marker, killing two young children and leaving a family devastated.

Authorities have charged 64-year-old Stephen Schneider in connection with the fatal crash.

 WHAT HAPPENED ON THE BAY?

According to authorities, Schneider was operating the boat when it struck a wooden channel marker at around 9 p.m.

His 9-year-old granddaughter and 7-year-old grandson were thrown into the water.

The children were later pulled from the bay, but both were pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital.

Schneider’s wife was also aboard the vessel.

CHARGES FOLLOWED

Authorities allege that Schneider was operating the boat while intoxicated.

He faces charges including second-degree vehicular homicide and boating while intoxicated, according to reports.

Schneider later surrendered to authorities and was taken into custody.

The case will now move through the court system, where prosecutors will have to prove the allegations.

A VERY DIFFERENT LIFE

Public records reportedly show Schneider had lived in a waterfront property in Bayville, New Jersey, valued at around $1 million.

But the value of a home means little against the devastation now facing the family.

Two children are gone.

And a grandfather is facing serious criminal charges connected to their deaths.

The tragedy raises difficult questions about alcohol, boating safety and the decisions made before a vessel enters the water.

Investigators will have to establish exactly what happened aboard the boat, Schneider’s condition at the time of the crash and the circumstances that led the vessel into the channel marker.

Those questions will ultimately be addressed through the legal process.

 ONE BOAT.

 ONE SUMMER NIGHT.

TWO CHILDREN WHO NEVER CAME HOME.

AND A GRANDFATHER NOW FACING SERIOUS CHARGES.

The case is only beginning in court, but for the children’s loved ones, the consequences of that night are already permanent.
