Long before breakups could be delivered by text message, Sylvester Stallone found another way to avoid one of the most difficult conversations of his life.

In 1994, after nearly six years with Jennifer Flavin, the Rocky star sent her a handwritten letter.

It was six pages long.

And it arrived by FedEx.

Flavin had not been expecting their relationship to end. She later recalled wanting something the letter could not provide: an actual conversation about what had happened.

Three decades later, Stallone himself would look back on the decision with embarrassment. During a 2024 interview, he called himself a “coward” for choosing a letter instead of facing Flavin in person, admitting that part of him may have avoided the conversation because he did not truly want to lose her.

The remarkable part of the story is not simply that Flavin eventually took him back.

It is that 28 years after that FedEx package arrived, their relationship reached another breaking point — this time after 25 years of marriage.

And once again, Stallone had to decide what life without Jennifer Flavin might actually mean.

They Met Before Jennifer Flavin Was Famous

Stallone and Flavin first crossed paths in 1988 at a restaurant in Southern California.

Flavin was 19 and beginning her modeling career. Stallone was already one of the most recognizable movie stars in the world, having turned Rocky Balboa and John Rambo into defining characters of 1980s Hollywood.

He had also already been married twice.

Despite the difference in their ages and experience, Stallone and Flavin began a relationship that lasted for years. By 1990, they were appearing publicly together, and what might initially have looked like another Hollywood romance developed into something considerably more serious.

According to Flavin’s recollections from the period, they were talking about a future together.

That was why what happened in 1994 felt so abrupt.

Instead of sitting down with her, Stallone sent the six-page handwritten breakup letter through Federal Express.

Flavin described the writing as “pretty sloppy” and made clear that the painful part was not simply being left. After spending years with someone, she believed she at least deserved a conversation. Contemporary coverage also recorded her shock because the couple had discussed having children together.

There was another part of the story Flavin initially did not know.

She later learned that Stallone had been involved with model Janice Dickinson. At the time, Stallone believed Dickinson’s newborn daughter could be his child.

A paternity test subsequently showed that Stallone was not the father, and his relationship with Dickinson ended.

But his relationship with Flavin appeared to be over too.

For a time, at least.

Somehow, They Found Their Way Back

By 1995, Stallone and Flavin had reconciled.

The reunion quickly became something larger than simply restarting an old romance.

Their first daughter, Sophia Rose, was born in August 1996. Then, on May 17, 1997, Stallone and Flavin married in London.

The wedding included a civil ceremony at The Dorchester hotel before celebrations continued at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire. At the time, Stallone publicly described the arrival of Sophia and his marriage to Flavin as the two great developments of the previous year.

Their family continued to grow.

Sistine was born in 1998, followed by Scarlet in 2002.

The man who had once dispatched six pages through FedEx instead of having a breakup conversation had now built a family with the woman who received them.

For the next quarter-century, Stallone and Flavin remained married through the pressures of celebrity, filmmaking, parenthood and the constant public attention surrounding one of Hollywood’s biggest stars.

Then came August 2022.

After 25 Years of Marriage, Flavin Filed for Divorce

On August 19, 2022, Flavin filed for dissolution of marriage in Palm Beach County, Florida.

The timing made the news particularly striking. Only months earlier, the couple had celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.

Stallone responded publicly by saying that he loved his family and that the personal issues would be handled privately and amicably.

This time there was no six-page goodbye.

There were attorneys, court papers and the very real possibility that a marriage dating back to 1997 was ending.

But the divorce process did not continue for long.

Roughly a month after Flavin filed, Stallone’s representative confirmed that the couple had met at home, talked through their differences and reconciled. Their divorce case was formally dismissed in October.

What Stallone said afterward revealed something larger than a simple change of mind.

The near-divorce had apparently forced him to reconsider the way he had organized his life.

Stallone Admitted Work Had Come Before Family

After the reconciliation, Stallone spoke unusually openly about his priorities.

He described the marital crisis as a difficult period that produced a “reawakening” about what mattered most to him. His family, he said, needed to take precedence over his career.

That was significant coming from Stallone.

His professional life had been defined by relentless ambition. He wrote Rocky when his career was struggling, fought to play the title role himself, and spent decades writing, producing, directing and starring in major franchises.

But the same determination that built an extraordinary career also demanded time.

Looking back after the 2022 crisis, Stallone acknowledged that he had not paid enough attention to his children while they were growing up because he had been so focused on work.

He made the point even more plainly in another interview that November: putting work ahead of his family had been a “tragic mistake,” and he did not intend to repeat it.

At the Tulsa King premiere soon afterward, with Flavin and two of their daughters beside him, Stallone said his priorities had once been wrong: work came first. Now, he said, his family did.

The contrast with 1994 was difficult to miss.

Back then, Stallone had avoided an uncomfortable conversation by putting his feelings into six handwritten pages and sending them away.

In 2022, when the relationship again seemed close to ending, the couple went home and talked.

Thirty Years Later, He Finally Explained the Letter

In December 2024, Stallone revisited the infamous FedEx breakup while sitting beside Flavin during an interview with Sean Hannity.

This time he did not defend himself.

He acknowledged that sending a letter had allowed him to escape the emotional difficulty of saying the words face-to-face.

He also suggested that his reluctance to confront Flavin directly may have revealed something he did not understand at the time: he did not really want the relationship to be over.

Stallone said he eventually realized he could not imagine life without her.

Their marriage has survived well beyond the second crisis.

On May 17, 2026, Stallone and Flavin celebrated their 29th wedding anniversary. Nearly four years after the divorce filing, they remained together, with Stallone posting a message saying his wife gave his life meaning.

For a relationship famous for one of Hollywood’s strangest breakup methods, perhaps the most revealing part is what happened afterward.
