THE SEARCH FOR NANCY GUTHRIE HAS STALLED — BUT INVESTIGATORS STILL REFUSE TO GIVE UP

TUCSON, ARIZONA — More than six months after Nancy Guthrie vanished from her Tucson-area home, the mystery surrounding the 84-year-old grandmother remains unresolved.

Guthrie, the mother of Today show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, disappeared in the early hours of February 1, 2026. Investigators believe she was taken from her home, but her whereabouts remain unknown. No suspect has been publicly identified, and no charges have been filed.

What initially appeared to be a kidnapping investigation has become an increasingly complex search involving the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI.

Investigators have examined surveillance footage, physical evidence, biological samples and thousands of tips in an effort to determine what happened inside and around Guthrie’s home.

A surveillance camera captured an apparent suspect near the residence. Authorities described the person as a man of average build, approximately 5-foot-9 to 5-foot-10, wearing a mask, gloves and a black backpack.

Investigators have also pursued DNA evidence recovered during the investigation. However, a hair sample found at Guthrie’s home ultimately produced no usable result and did not identify a suspect, according to Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos.

The case has also been complicated by a series of ransom communications. Authorities eventually released two notes sent after Guthrie disappeared. One claimed she was being held for ransom, while a later message claimed she had died after being taken and that her remains had been left in a remote area.

Authorities have not confirmed that the second message is truthful, and they have not publicly established what happened to Guthrie. The notes were released in the hope that someone might recognize the language or handwriting and provide investigators with a crucial lead.

The absence of a body presents an additional challenge.

Even in a case where investigators believe a person may have been killed, prosecutors would still need compelling evidence establishing both that a death occurred and who was responsible. At this stage, however, authorities have not filed criminal charges.

The investigation has also faced scrutiny over its progress and the coordination between local and federal agencies. Reports have raised questions about delays involving evidence, resources and communication during the early stages of the investigation.

Despite the lack of a breakthrough, authorities continue to describe the investigation as active.

For Savannah Guthrie and her family, the uncertainty remains devastating. They have repeatedly appealed to the public for information, emphasizing that even a seemingly insignificant observation could help investigators determine what happened to Nancy.
