Filo Jet Ferry Sinks Off Northern Cyprus as 20 Remain Missing

A high-speed ferry carrying 267 passengers and crew capsized and sank off the coast of Kyrenia (Girne), Northern Cyprus, on August 30, 2026, while traveling toward Taşucu, Türkiye.

The disaster has left eight people dead, while rescue efforts continued as authorities searched for those still unaccounted for.

As of September 2, approximately 20 people remained missing. Rescue teams reportedly believed some of the missing passengers could still be trapped inside the sunken vessel, adding urgency to the underwater search.

The wreckage of the Filo Jet was located at a depth of approximately 550 meters, making conventional rescue operations extremely difficult. Authorities have therefore relied on remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs) to examine the wreck and assist in the search for possible survivors and victims.

The vessel’s extreme depth presents major challenges for divers and rescue crews, while teams continue working to determine the fate of those who remain missing.

The search and recovery operation remains ongoing as authorities work to locate the missing and investigate the circumstances that caused the ferry to capsize and sink.
