Florida Woman, 20, Dies in I-95 Crash Hours Before Scheduled Swearing-In as Sheriff’s Office Employee

Cassi Taylor, 20, of Palm Bay, Florida, was killed in a devastating hit-and-run crash on I-95 just hours before she was scheduled to be officially sworn in as a civilian employee with a local sheriff’s office.

The crash happened around 11:52 p.m. Sunday, August 30, 2026, on Interstate 95 near Titusville.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a Mercedes-Benz traveling ahead of Taylor’s Toyota Tacoma struck an alligator that was lying in the roadway. The collision left the vehicle disabled.

Taylor was driving behind the Mercedes when she reportedly swerved to avoid the stopped vehicle. She then lost control of her Tacoma, causing it to overturn. Taylor was ejected from the truck and was subsequently struck by a third vehicle.

The driver of that vehicle reportedly fled the scene.

Taylor was pronounced dead at the scene. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) is investigating the crash and searching for the driver involved in the fatal hit-and-run.

The tragedy was especially devastating for Taylor’s family and the law-enforcement community. She was the daughter of Deputy Scott Burke of the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.

Taylor had recently begun working with the agency as a civilian corrections assistant, joining on July 20. She was scheduled to take part in her official swearing-in ceremony the following day—just hours after the crash claimed her life.

What should have been the beginning of a new chapter in Taylor’s career instead became a heartbreaking loss for her family, colleagues and the law-enforcement community.

Investigators continue to work to identify the third driver and determine the full circumstances surrounding the crash.
