Ohio Supreme Court Rejects Mackenzie Shirilla’s Latest Appeal, Ending State Court Challenges

The Ohio Supreme Court has rejected Mackenzie Shirilla’s latest request for review, marking another setback in her efforts to challenge her conviction and effectively exhausting her avenues for directly appealing the case within Ohio’s state court system.

The court’s decision was issued on September 1, 2026, and represents the latest instance in which Ohio’s highest court has declined to intervene.

Previous Appeal Rejected Over Filing Deadline

The latest decision follows an earlier ruling in June 2026, when the Ohio Supreme Court also declined to hear Shirilla’s case.

At the time, the court rejected her post-conviction appeal because it had been filed one day after the deadline. Shirilla’s attorney argued that the delay resulted from a calculation error related to 2024 being a leap year.

The Ohio Eighth District Court of Appeals had previously upheld the dismissal of Shirilla’s post-conviction petition in March 2026.

Convicted in Fatal 2022 Crash

Shirilla was sentenced in 2023 after being convicted in connection with the deaths of Dominic Russo, 20, and Davion Flanagan, 19, who were killed in a 2022 car crash.

She is currently serving two concurrent life sentences, with the possibility of parole after a minimum of 15 years.

With the Ohio Supreme Court’s latest rejection, Shirilla has now exhausted the available avenues within Ohio’s state court system for directly challenging her conviction through the appeals process.

The ruling does not change her existing sentence, and she remains incarcerated while serving her concurrent life terms.
