Adriana Jimenez was 14 weeks pregnant when she was shot while sitting in a car with her sister. She has now been declared brain-dead, according to her family.

Adriana and her sister, Maria Fernanda Jimenez, were sitting in a car in an alleyway outside their apartment in the Canoga Park neighborhood of Los Angeles on Aug. 23 when they were both shot by a gunman, the siblings’ uncle told KABC.

Maria Fernanda was shot twice, including once in the neck, but is expected to recover, her uncle told KABC in the interview published on Sept. 3.

Adriana, who was sitting in the driver’s seat, was shot in the head and has since been declared brain-dead, her uncle said.

Adriana, who is already a mom to a 6-year-old daughter, also experienced a pregnancy loss, seemingly as a result of her injuries. “Sadly, her baby also died,” her uncle told KABC.

The gunman in the Aug. 23 shooting has been arrested, KABC reported, citing the sisters’ family. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is investigating the shooting, according to the outlet.

“The suspect is someone who is close to the family. He is known to the family. We don’t understand why he made that decision,” the sisters’ uncle told KABC.

He also said that the Canoga Park shooting “has nothing to do with gangs.”

“It was so tragic,” the sisters’ uncle told KABC of the Aug. 23 shooting. “I couldn’t believe it.”

The LAPD did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Before the shooting, Adriana was set to celebrate her 23rd birthday and do a “gender reveal” for her second child on Sept. 11, her uncle told KABC. Her 6-year-old daughter misses her, he said.

“That’s the hardest part,” he told the outlet, “knowing the little girl calls out for her mom and cries for her.”

“We know that we have to be strong, unite as a family and move past this tragedy,” he added.

Adriana’s family has created a GoFundMe to raise money to either cremate her body or return her remains to El Salvador, where she and her sister are from.

The fundraiser describes the 22-year-old as “the loving mother of a beautiful 6-year-old daughter who will now have to grow up without her mom.”

“No child should have to experience a loss like this,” the GoFundMe continues, “and our hearts are shattered knowing the difficult road that lies ahead for her.”
