FIVE DEAD AFTER AMAZON CARGO PLANE CRASHES AT MIAMI AIRPORT — BOEING 767 ERUPTS IN FLAMES AFTER STRIKING VEHICLES

A routine landing turned into a deadly disaster Sunday afternoon when an Amazon cargo plane overran the runway at Miami International Airport, slammed into multiple vehicles and burst into flames.

At least five people were killed and five others injured, according to local officials.

Three of the injured were reported to be in critical condition, while two others were taken to hospitals for treatment. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims.

THE PLANE CAME IN FROM PUERTO RICO

The aircraft was a Boeing 767-300 cargo plane operating as Prime Air Flight 7598.

It was operated by 21 Air for Amazon and had departed from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The plane overran a runway at Miami International Airport at around 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 6.

It continued beyond the runway and struck multiple vehicles near the airport before coming to rest and catching fire.

Then the emergency response began.

BLACK SMOKE FILLED THE SKY

More than 60 Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units and roughly 200 emergency personnel rushed to the scene.

When firefighters arrived, the aircraft was burning and producing heavy black smoke.

Crews faced a complex rescue operation, including people trapped inside vehicles that had been struck by the plane.

The pilots were also initially trapped inside the aircraft and had to be rescued.

The airport immediately imposed a ground stop, bringing flights at one of the busiest airports in the United States to a temporary halt.

Operations later began to resume, although major delays and cancellations continued.

FIVE LIVES LOST

Officials later confirmed that five people had died.

Five others were injured, including three who remained in critical condition.

At the time of the initial investigation, authorities had not publicly identified the victims or definitively stated whether those who died were passengers or crew members aboard the cargo aircraft or people on the ground.

The Boeing 767 was a freighter, meaning the number of people aboard was expected to be limited.

For families waiting for confirmation, those unanswered questions made an already devastating scene even harder.

WHAT CAUSED THE CRASH?

That remains one of the biggest questions.

The FAA has opened an investigation, while the National Transportation Safety Board is also gathering information and sending investigators to the scene.

Officials have not yet established why the aircraft overran the runway.

Weather conditions, aircraft performance, runway conditions and the actions of the flight crew are among the issues investigators will need to examine before a cause can be determined.

For now, there is no confirmed explanation for why the aircraft failed to stop on the runway.

Amazon said it was working closely with authorities and that its immediate priority was the safety, well-being and care of everyone affected.
