Illinois Mother Faces Murder Charges After 2-Year-Old Son Found Dead in Basement

A 40-year-old Illinois woman is facing three counts of first-degree murder in connection with the death of her 2-year-old son.

Corie A. Walsh, of Frankfort, Illinois, was charged following the death of her son, Barrett Walsh, on September 1, 2026.

According to prosecutorial records, a neighbor discovered Barrett unconscious in the basement and immediately called 911. The neighbor also attempted CPR on the child while waiting for emergency responders to arrive.

Despite efforts to save him, Barrett was pronounced dead.

An examination later determined that the child’s cause of death was asphyxiation caused by neck compression from a ligature, according to the records cited in the case.

The circumstances surrounding the child’s death are now at the center of the criminal investigation, with Walsh facing three separate counts of first-degree murder.

The charges represent serious allegations, and prosecutors will be required to establish the evidence against Walsh through the court process. Details regarding what investigators believe happened in the basement and the circumstances leading up to Barrett’s death may emerge as the case proceeds.
