“FOREVER OUR LITTLE ANGEL” — FAMILY MOURNS TWO-YEAR-OLD PETER MULCAIRE AFTER DEVASTATING LIMERICK HIT-AND-RUN

A little boy who had only just begun preschool is now being remembered as his family prepares to say their final goodbye.

Peter Mulcaire was just 2 years old when his young life came to a devastating end in a suspected hit-and-run in Rathkeale, Co Limerick.

Peter had reportedly been playing on his toy tractor near his home shortly before 4pm on Saturday when he was struck by a vehicle. He suffered catastrophic injuries and was taken for emergency medical treatment, but was later pronounced dead.

HE HAD ONLY JUST STARTED PRESCHOOL

The tragedy came only days after Peter had begun preschool.

His parents, Kerrie and James, remembered their little boy as their “golden boy” — a child adored by his siblings, grandparents and wider family.

Relatives and friends have since flooded social media with tributes, describing Peter as a beautiful, loving child and a “little angel.”

For a family who had just been celebrating the beginning of a new chapter for their little boy, the loss has been devastating.

THE VEHICLE LEFT THE SCENE

Gardaí are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision.

The vehicle involved did not remain at the scene. A man in his 30s was subsequently arrested at another location on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant for the purpose of providing an evidential blood or urine sample.

He was later released pending analysis of that sample.

At this stage, no conviction has been established. Gardaí continue to investigate what happened and have appealed to anyone who witnessed the collision or may have relevant CCTV or dash-cam footage to come forward.

A COMMUNITY IN MOURNING

The shock has spread throughout Rathkeale.

A community event planned for the following day was cancelled out of respect for Peter and his grieving family.

Now, attention has turned to Peter’s final farewell.

His wake will take place at Cross’s Funeral Home in Limerick on Tuesday, September 8, from 6pm to 8pm.

His Mass of the Angels will be held at St Mary’s Church in Rathkeale on Wednesday, September 9, at 11:30am, followed by burial at New Cemetery in Rathkeale. His family has asked for privacy and requested that no photographs or videos be taken during the funeral service.

Peter was only two.

He had just started preschool.

He had so much life ahead of him.

Now his family is left with memories, photographs — and the heartbreaking task of saying goodbye to a little boy they called their “golden boy.”
