A family’s flight home from the Bahamas has ended in tragedy after a small plane carrying four relatives disappeared over the water — and all four were later found deceased.

The victims were identified as 80-year-old Mario Lamar Sr., his 79-year-old wife, Lili Lamar, and their grandchildren, Sofi Sosa, 28, and Christian Sosa, 22.

Mario, an experienced pilot with more than 40 years of flying experience, was at the controls of the Piper PA-34 aircraft.

THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO BE FLYING HOME

The family had spent the Labor Day weekend at their home on Great Harbour Cay in the Bahamas.

On September 7, they boarded the family’s Piper PA-34, registration N212ML, for the flight back toward South Florida.

The destination was Miami Executive Airport.

According to reports, the aircraft departed Great Harbour Cay at approximately 10:12 a.m.

For the family, it was supposed to be a routine journey home.

Instead, it became a frantic search across the waters of the Bahamas.

THEN THE PLANE DISAPPEARED

Air traffic controllers eventually lost contact with the aircraft when it was approximately 13 miles west of Andros Island.

Authorities received reports of a possible crash near Red Bays, North Andros.

Search crews quickly mobilized.

The U.S. Coast Guard joined Bahamian authorities, deploying an HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircraft to assist in the search.

But poor weather complicated the operation, making the search significantly more difficult.

Family members were also desperately searching.

They had initially hoped their loved ones might somehow have survived the crash.

Relatives even appealed to boat owners and civilians in the area to join the search.

The family later confirmed that all four people aboard the aircraft had been found deceased.

“What makes this even more heartbreaking,” relatives said, was that one of their own family members was the person who located a loved one and had to bring that relative onto their boat.

Mario Lamar was described by relatives as a highly experienced pilot who had been flying for more than four decades.

Family members also said he regularly maintained the aircraft and was familiar with the route.

His wife, Lili, 79, was traveling with him.

Their grandchildren, Sofi and Christian Sosa, were also aboard.

Sofi, 28, had recently graduated from Wake Forest University, while Christian, 22, had recently graduated from Loyola Marymount University, according to reports.

The family had reportedly spent the holiday weekend together at their Bahamas home before beginning the return journey.

Reports indicate the aircraft lost contact with air traffic control before the crash, but investigators have not publicly established why the plane went down.
