A DOLL LIKE ME: HELPING EVERY CHILD FEEL SEEN AND BELOVED

While working as a pediatric oncology social worker, Amy Jandrisevits noticed a subtle yet heartbreaking reality in the hospital wards: many young patients were playing with toys that looked nothing like them. For children enduring complex medical procedures, limb differences, or chronic conditions, standard toys often failed to reflect their unique realities, leaving them feeling isolated during their most vulnerable moments.

Driven by a desire to change this narrative, Amy decided to take matters into her own hands. In 2014, sitting at her dining-room table in Wisconsin, she founded “A Doll Like Me.” She began crafting custom, handmade dolls specifically designed to mirror the exact features of the children who would receive them. Every detail is meticulously tailored to represent the individual child, including limb differences, prosthetics, medical devices like feeding tubes, birthmarks, vitiligo, and various other physical unique features.

Each custom creation carries a profound, unspoken message: “You are not different. You are represented. You belong.” By seeing their own likeness reflected in a beloved toy, children often experience a powerful shift in perspective, turning features they once felt self-conscious about into sources of pride and confidence.

What began as a modest personal project at a dining table has since expanded into a remarkable global mission. Amy’s work goes far beyond simple toy manufacturing; it provides vital emotional support and validation. Through her dedicated craftsmanship, she ensures that children facing health challenges know they are seen, valued, and never alone.
