DAD, 58, DIES AFTER BEING FOUND FACE-DOWN IN CRUISE SHIP POOL WHILE CELEBRATING HIS SON’S WEDDING

A joyful family celebration turned into a devastating tragedy when Minnesota pastor Stephen Junker suffered a catastrophic injury aboard a cruise ship off the coast of Italy.

What was supposed to be a celebration of his son’s wedding became the final journey of a beloved father, husband and pastor.

Stephen Junker, 58, was aboard a cruise ship off the coast of Italy on August 16 when he was found face-down in a swimming pool.

According to a family fundraiser, Stephen had suffered a severe spinal cord injury and nearly drowned.

He was rushed by the coast guard to a hospital in Naples, where doctors immediately began treating his devastating injuries.

THE FAMILY’S DREAM CELEBRATION TURNED INTO A NIGHTMARE

Stephen had been travelling with his family to celebrate his son’s wedding.

Instead of returning home with memories of a joyful family occasion, his loved ones suddenly found themselves facing a medical emergency thousands of miles away.

Doctors performed emergency spinal cord surgery after the incident.

But the damage was devastating.

Stephen was left quadriplegic and unable to breathe without the assistance of a ventilator.

On August 23, he was transferred from Italy to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where his family hoped specialists could help him recover.

“EVERYTHING THAT COULD POSSIBLY BE DONE”

The family continued to hope for a breakthrough.

But after further diagnostic testing at Mayo Clinic, doctors determined that Stephen had injuries that could not be treated.

On September 4, his daughter Elizabeth shared the heartbreaking news that her father had died.

She said Stephen was surrounded by his wife, children, parents and friends in his final moments.

The family also expressed gratitude to the medical teams who cared for him and to everyone who contributed to help them through the enormous medical and financial burden.

A PASTOR WHO SPENT YEARS SERVING OTHERS

Stephen’s life had been defined by more than the tragedy that ended it.

He initially trained as a pharmacist after graduating from Creighton University in Omaha.

But he later followed a different calling, attending Lutheran Brethren Seminary and pursuing ministry.

For nearly a decade, he served as pastor of Chippewa Lutheran Church in Minnesota.

Those who knew him remembered him for his animated sermons, his love of conversation and his willingness to help people in need.

His family now remembers a man whose faith remained central to his life.

His wife, Jeanine Junker, described the loss as incredibly difficult for their church community while sharing her belief that Stephen would one day rise again through his faith.

A FAMILY LEFT TO MOURN

Stephen is survived by his wife, five children, a grandson, his parents, his sister and many other relatives and friends.

His death came less than three weeks after the cruise-ship incident that had changed the family’s lives.

What began as a wedding celebration ended with an unimaginable loss.

And for those who knew Stephen, his final chapter is now being remembered not for the tragedy aboard the ship, but for the years he spent serving his family, his church and his community.

A funeral service is scheduled for September 11 at Chippewa Lutheran Church, followed by his burial.
