ONE WORD ON THE HEARSE SAID EVERYTHING: “DAD”

HARTLEPOOL, ENGLAND — Among the hundreds of police officers, flags and solemn tributes surrounding the funeral of PC Matthew Blades, one small detail captured the attention of mourners and people watching from afar.

On top of the hearse carrying the 37-year-old officer was a floral tribute spelling a single word:

“DAD.”

It was only three letters.

But for Matthew’s two young sons, those three letters represented far more than his job, his uniform or the badge he wore every day.

They represented the man waiting for them at home.

Matthew Blades was laid to rest in his hometown of Hartlepool on Wednesday, September 9, following his death in the devastating A66 collision near Middlesbrough on August 22.

The married father of two was one of two Cleveland Police armed response officers killed in the crash. His colleague, 38-year-old PC Tom Clough, also lost his life, along with five young men who were traveling in a Volkswagen Passat.

A FAREWELL FIT FOR A HERO

The streets of Hartlepool were transformed as hundreds of police officers and members of the public gathered to pay their respects.

Standard bearers representing police forces from across the United Kingdom attended the service at St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, while officers lined Hutton Avenue as the funeral cortege made its way through the town.

Bagpipers accompanied the procession, and the atmosphere remained solemn as the hearse approached the church.

The scale of the ceremony reflected how deeply Matthew’s loss had been felt—not only within Cleveland Police, but across the wider policing community.

Yet amid the uniforms, flags and formal ceremony, the word “Dad” stood out.

It brought the focus back to Matthew the person.

Not just PC Blades.

Not just an armed response officer.

But a husband.

A father.

A son.

A friend.

And, most importantly to two young boys, Dad.

“FOREVER OUR SUPERHERO”

Matthew’s wife, Sarah, paid an emotional tribute to her husband during the farewell.

She described him as her beloved husband, best friend and a devoted father to their two boys.

Her final words about him were simple but devastating:

“Forever loved. Forever missed. Forever our superhero. Our Matt and Dad.”

Those words echoed the message carried on the hearse.

While hundreds came to honor the police officer Matthew had become, his family was saying goodbye to the man they knew long before the uniform.

A COMMUNITY THAT KNEW HIM

Matthew was not remembered only for his work with Cleveland Police.

He was also known in Hartlepool through sport and the local community.

Friends and colleagues have described him as a dedicated family man and a familiar figure in the town’s sporting circles. He had also worked as a football coach, giving him another connection with young people in the community.

That connection was visible during the funeral as people from different parts of his life came together.

Police officers stood alongside members of the public.

THE CRASH THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough were on duty in a marked police vehicle on the A66 near South Bank, close to Middlesbrough, during the early hours of August 22.

Their vehicle was struck by a Volkswagen Passat traveling the wrong way along the dual carriageway.

Five young men in the Passat also died in the collision.

The vehicle had previously been involved in a police pursuit, which was later aborted before the fatal crash. The circumstances surrounding the incident have continued to draw significant public attention.

The tragedy devastated two police families while sending shockwaves through communities across the North East.

A FINAL MESSAGE FROM TWO LITTLE BOYS

There were speeches.

There were flags.

There were hundreds of uniforms.

There were bagpipes and a formal police procession.

But perhaps the most powerful tribute needed none of those things.

DAD.
