Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick Mark Their 38th Wedding Anniversary with ‘Perfect’ Low-Key Canoeing Trip

Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick are marking their 38th wedding anniversary with a low-key canoeing trip.

Sedgwick, who wed Bacon on Sept. 4, 1988, shared two photos of their celebrations on Instagram on Wednesday, Sept. 9. The images featured the casually dressed pair in a canoe on an idyllic-looking lake. Both wore plaid overshirts for their outdoor adventure, while Sedgwick, 61, wore a baseball cap and Bacon, 68, wore sunglasses.

In her playful caption, the actress wrote, “Perfect anniversary weekend. ❤️ Canoe believe it’s been 38 years?!”

Five days before, the Footloose actor had shared a sweet anniversary tribute of his own alongside a snap of himself and Sedgwick all dressed up in the back of a car on the way to the 58th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles in August 2006. He captioned the intimate snap with the words, “38 years with my love.”

After meeting while working on Lemon Sky back in 1987, the pair quickly fell in love and were engaged by the end of the year. They tied the knot on Sept. 4, 1988, and went on to welcome two children, Travis, 37, and Sosie, 34.

Sedgwick told PEOPLE in 2020 that the long-term couple is frequently asked for their relationship advice and, in response, she quipped, “I joke that the secret to a successful marriage is to not take marriage advice from celebrities.”

She went on to note that she and Bacon simply “got lucky” by meeting and marrying. “I honestly believe that’s [the] truth,” she added.

She went on to note, “That thing people do, ‘If only I had this, if only I had that …’ There has to be some piece of wholeness that is within yourself before you can let somebody love you the way that you need to be loved.”

Three years later, Sedgwick shared her secret to a long-lasting union: laughter.

“A sense of humor is crucial,” she said, adding that Bacon is “very freaking funny.”

The Bacon-Sedgwick family proved their close bond earlier this year when they stepped out together for the premiere of their movie, Family Night.

While Bacon and Sedgwick co-directed the film, Sosie and Travis star in the horror-comedy that follows a filmmaking family whose low-budget movie turns into a real-life slasher on set.

In March, while speaking exclusively to PEOPLE at SXSW, Sosie joked that she didn’t have to audition to be in Family Movie.

“They suggested that the four of us do a movie together. We wanted it to be comedy, horror kind of energy,” she said of her parents.

Bacon also noted to PEOPLE at the event that it was “pretty familiar” working with his wife for the first time in nearly two decades.

“It was just great because if I missed something or I slipped up or I forgot some detail, she was right there with it,” he said at the festival.
