For months, the disappearance of four-year-old August “Gus” Lamont has remained one of Australia’s most haunting mysteries.

Gus vanished from his family’s remote sheep farm at Oak Park Station in South Australia on September 27, 2025. Despite an enormous search involving police, emergency personnel, military resources, trackers and volunteers, the little boy has never been found.

Then, more than four months later, investigators made a dramatic change to the case.

South Australia Police declared Gus’s disappearance a major crime and revealed that a person who lived at the property is now considered a suspect.

THE LAST TIME ANYONE SAW GUS

Gus was last seen outside his family’s remote property near Yunta, South Australia.

According to police, the four-year-old had been playing outside when he disappeared. At the time, investigators considered the possibility that he might have wandered away from the homestead.

His disappearance immediately triggered a massive search operation across the harsh rural landscape.

Police, emergency personnel, Australian Defence Force members, trackers and community volunteers searched the surrounding area, while aircraft and other specialist resources were deployed.

The operation eventually became one of the most extensive searches conducted for a missing person in the region.

But Gus was nowhere to be found.

SEARCH TEAMS SCOURED THE PROPERTY

Investigators searched enormous areas around Oak Park Station, including dams, mine shafts and surrounding land.

According to South Australia Police, the search involved 163 SAPOL members and 230 non-SAPOL resources, including emergency services, the Australian Defence Force, an Indigenous tracker and community volunteers.

Search teams also carried out extensive aerial operations.

Yet despite the scale of the effort, investigators said they found no evidence suggesting that Gus had simply wandered away.

That finding would eventually change the direction of the investigation.

POLICE TURN THEIR ATTENTION TO SOMEONE KNOWN TO GUS

On February 5, 2026, South Australia Police announced that the case had been formally declared a major crime.

Detective Superintendent Darren Fielke said one person who had lived at Oak Park Station was now considered a suspect.

Police said the individual had previously been cooperating with investigators but had since withdrawn that cooperation.

Investigators also identified what they described as inconsistencies and discrepancies in information provided during the investigation.

Police subsequently executed a search warrant at the property and seized several items, including a vehicle, a motorcycle and electronic devices.

Importantly, authorities stressed that Gus’s parents are not suspects and continue to assist investigators.

NO STRANGER ABDUCTION EVIDENCE HAS BEEN FOUND

One of the major questions surrounding Gus’s disappearance has always been whether someone unknown to the family could have taken him.

Investigators pursued that possibility alongside another theory involving someone familiar with the child.

But police said they had found no evidence indicating that Gus was abducted by an unknown person.

Instead, the investigation increasingly focused on the possibility that someone who knew Gus may have been involved in his disappearance.

Police have not publicly identified that suspect, and no one has been charged in connection with Gus’s disappearance.

MONTHS LATER, THERE IS STILL NO ANSWER

The case remains deeply painful for Gus’s family and the community surrounding Oak Park Station.

In March 2026, Task Force Horizon returned to the property after significant rainfall created hopes that previously hidden evidence might emerge.

Investigators searched the area again — but once more, no new breakthrough was announced. Police said further activity at Oak Park Station had not been ruled out.

POLICE VOW TO KEEP SEARCHING

Despite the passage of time, authorities have repeatedly said the investigation is not over.

Police have indicated that further searches could take place at Oak Park Station and nearby locations as new information or intelligence becomes available.

Detective Superintendent Fielke described the disappearance as tragic and distressing for Gus’s parents and the wider community.

Investigators say they remain determined to establish what happened to the little boy and, ultimately, provide answers to his family.

For now, August “Gus” Lamont remains missing.
