On Tuesday, September 15, investigators located the Jeep submerged in the St. Joseph River.

Two women were found inside.

At first, police said the clothing matched descriptions of Vanessa and Alexa but formal identification was still pending.

On Wednesday, the Berrien County medical examiner’s office confirmed the devastating news: the two women were Vanessa Bautista and Alexa Navarro.

Police believe the vehicle went over an embankment before entering the river.

However, authorities have not publicly explained exactly how the Jeep ended up in the water.

 QUESTIONS STILL REMAIN

The cause of death remains pending.

Investigators are also examining the circumstances surrounding the disappearance and the vehicle’s journey into the river.

Niles Police Chief James Millin said authorities have not determined whether any foul play was involved.

Police have also said there is currently no indication that the vehicle was deliberately damaged by another party, although that part of the investigation remains ongoing.

Autopsy and toxicology results are expected to provide investigators with additional information.

TWO MOTHERS, FOUR YOUNG CHILDREN LEFT BEHIND

Alexa was a mother to a 3-year-old child, while Vanessa was the mother of two young children, aged 2 and 3.

The families had spent days searching and hoping for their safe return.

Instead, the discovery has left relatives and friends mourning two young women whose lives ended far too soon.

Vanessa and Alexa were also described by relatives as extremely close friends who had known each other since middle school.

Their families are now left waiting for answers as investigators continue working to establish exactly what happened during the final hours of their lives.

 THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES

A planned protest following the discovery was changed into a prayer vigil, as members of the community gathered to support the families.

The investigation remains active, with authorities continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash, the vehicle’s movements and the women’s deaths.

Two young mothers left home after a night celebrating a birthday. Their families are now facing an unimaginable goodbye — while investigators work to answer the questions that remain.
