15-YEAR-OLD FOOTBALL PLAYER DAVION FEWELL DIES AFTER IN-GAME INJURY — COMMUNITY GATHERS TO HONOR A ‘FEARLESS’ YOUNG ATHLETE

A high school football game in Greensboro, North Carolina, ended in heartbreak after 15-year-old Davion Fewell suffered an injury on the field and later died.

Davion, a student-athlete at Page High School, was playing in a junior varsity game against rival Grimsley High School on Thursday, September 10, when he was injured only minutes into the game.

He received medical attention at the scene before being transported to a hospital.

Days later, his family confirmed the devastating news that Davion had died.

A GAME THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

The circumstances surrounding Davion’s injury have not been publicly detailed by school officials.

Guilford County Schools confirmed that the student was injured during the game and later died, but officials have not disclosed the specific nature of the injury.

The National Federation of State High School Associations also said it could not comment on the individual incident because the circumstances surrounding Davion’s death remain under investigation.

According to Guilford County EMS information reported by WXII, an ambulance arrived at the stadium at 7:25 p.m., eight minutes after emergency crews were dispatched.

Davion was subsequently taken to a hospital, where he later died.

‘HE WAS FEARLESS’

As news of Davion’s death spread, stories about the teenager began emerging from classmates, families and members of the Greensboro football community.

People who knew him remembered him not simply as an athlete, but as a young person with a strong personality and a big heart.

One parent interviewed by WFMY News 2 said she had learned from students that Davion was a strong player who had “no fear.”

She also described him as someone who was smaller than some of the other players but had a “big heart.”

His football family shared its own message online, asking the community to keep Davion’s family, teammates, friends and staff in their thoughts.

The Page Pirates described him as “a great kid” and said he was deeply missed.

A COMMUNITY STRUGGLING TO GRIEVE

Davion’s death has affected not only Page High School but also the wider Greensboro football community.

Grimsley High School, whose team had been playing Page that night, shared its support for Davion’s family, teammates, coaches and classmates.

At Page High School, crisis-support services were made available to students and staff as the school community tried to process the loss.

The school also announced plans for a candlelight vigil in Davion’s honor.

The gathering was scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on September 17 at Page High School’s football stadium, the same place where so many memories of Davion as a young athlete were made.

SUPPORT FOR HIS FAMILY

As Davion’s family prepared to say goodbye, help also came from the football community.

The “A Son Never Forgets” Foundation, established by former NFL player and current New York Giants defensive tackle D.J. Reader, stepped forward to cover Davion’s funeral expenses.

Reader attended Grimsley High School himself, making the tragedy particularly close to the local football community.

The foundation’s support is intended to ease some of the financial burden on Davion’s family as they mourn their son.

QUESTIONS REMAIN

While the community focuses on remembering Davion, questions about exactly what happened during the game remain.

Officials have not publicly released the nature of his injury, and the NFHS said that any investigation into the circumstances would fall to local authorities and school officials rather than the national organization.

The NFHS also said that its Sports Medicine Advisory Committee routinely reviews fatalities in high school sports and evaluates safety practices and rules as part of its ongoing risk-minimization efforts.

For now, the focus remains on the teenager behind the headlines.

Davion Fewell was 15 years old — a student, a football player, a teammate, a friend and a son.

He went onto the field that night expecting to play the sport he loved.

Instead, his name is now being remembered across a community united in grief.
