Fans of The Voice UK are facing another major change as ITV prepares to introduce a dramatic new feature known as the “Lockdown Button” for the show’s upcoming series.

The reported format shake-up comes just days after the programme confirmed a major overhaul of its coaching and presenting line-up, including the departure of longtime coach Sir Tom Jones after 13 seasons.

The new button is expected to replace the recently introduced Rewind Button during the Blind Auditions, potentially changing one of the most important moments of the competition.

WHAT IS THE NEW ‘LOCKDOWN BUTTON’?

According to reports, the new feature will come into play when a contestant manages to achieve the coveted four-chair turn.

Under the reported format, once all four coaches turn their chairs for a singer, one of the coaches will be able to activate the Lockdown Button and immediately secure that contestant for their team.

That would remove the familiar part of the show in which the singer listens to the coaches’ pitches before deciding which team they want to join.

Instead, the power could shift to the coaches.

The singer’s fate could therefore be decided by whether one of the four coaches presses the new button.

The change is expected to create a very different kind of suspense during the Blind Auditions.

THE REWIND BUTTON IS BEING DROPPED

The Lockdown Button reportedly replaces the Rewind Button, which was introduced during the current series.

The Rewind feature will not return for the next run, according to reports.

The new system means that a four-chair turn could now play out very differently.

Instead of viewers waiting to see which coach can persuade the contestant to choose them, attention will turn to whether a coach uses the Lockdown Button to secure the singer immediately.

The reported change forms part of a much wider overhaul of the ITV talent show.

TOM JONES’ DEPARTURE ADDS TO THE DRAMA

The format change comes shortly after the shock announcement that Sir Tom Jones will not return as a full-time coach for the next series.

Jones, 86, had been one of the show’s original coaches and first joined The Voice UK in 2012.

Earlier this month, the Welsh music legend said he did not want to leave the programme and said ITV had made the decision.

He also said the reason given to him involved financial difficulties surrounding insurance.

ITV, meanwhile, has described the changes as part of a refresh of the programme and thanked Jones for his contribution over the years. The broadcaster has also indicated that discussions about possible involvement from Jones in another capacity could continue.

His departure has already generated a strong reaction among viewers.

A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT COACHING PANEL

The changes do not stop with Tom Jones.

For Series 15, Cheryl and Aitch are joining returning coaches Kelly Rowland and will.i.am.

The show is also losing McFly stars Danny Jones and Tom Fletcher from the coaching line-up.

The presenting team is changing too.

Longtime host Emma Willis is leaving the programme, with Stacey Solomon and Alesha Dixon set to take over as co-hosts.

That means viewers will see a substantially different version of The Voice UK when the next series arrives.
