Nearly six years after Texas State University student Jason Landry mysteriously disappeared while driving home for the holidays, authorities have confirmed that human remains discovered in Caldwell County belong to him.
Landry, who was 21 when he vanished, was last seen on December 13, 2020, as he traveled from San Marcos, Texas, toward his family home in Missouri City.
His abandoned and crashed car was discovered shortly after midnight on a remote stretch of Salt Flat Road near Luling.
For years, searches produced no sign of the missing college student.
Now, DNA testing has finally confirmed his identity — but major questions surrounding his death remain unanswered.
DNA FINALLY CONFIRMS JASON LANDRY’S IDENTITY
The Texas Attorney General’s Cold Case Unit announced on September 23 that recently recovered human remains had been conclusively identified as Landry.
A local resident discovered the remains on September 8, 2026, east of Salt Flat Road, between Soda Springs and Biggs Road in Caldwell County.
The University of North Texas Center for Human Identification conducted the DNA analysis that confirmed the remains belonged to Landry.
His family has been notified.
Authorities have asked the public to respect the family’s privacy as they process the devastating news after years of uncertainty.
HIS CAR WAS FOUND — BUT JASON WAS GONE
Landry disappeared while making the journey home for Christmas break.
His 2003 Nissan Altima was later found crashed and abandoned along Salt Flat Road near Luling.
Several of his personal belongings were discovered around the vehicle and along the roadway, but there was no sign of Jason himself.
The strange circumstances surrounding the scene led to years of searches involving law enforcement officers, professional search teams and volunteers.
The Texas Attorney General’s Cold Case Unit eventually became involved and worked with the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office, the Texas Department of Public Safety and Texas Search and Rescue.
Repeated ground and aerial searches were conducted, while investigators reviewed leads and reexamined evidence.
THE REMAINS WERE FOUND AFTER YEARS OF SEARCHES
The discovery came in an area that had been examined during the long-running search, but the remains were located outside the established search zone.
A drone pilot who had participated in the search told FOX 7 Austin that the location was roughly a mile beyond the area his team had previously searched.
That account comes from the volunteer search effort rather than an official measurement from investigators.
The discovery has renewed attention on why Landry was never located during the extensive searches conducted after his disappearance.
HOW DID JASON LANDRY DIE?
Despite the identification, authorities say one of the biggest questions remains unanswered.
The Texas Attorney General’s Office said the skeletal remains do not provide additional insight into the cause or manner of Landry’s death.
Investigators have also found no indication of foul play at this stage.
The case remains open and under investigation.
That means the DNA identification provides an answer to one devastating question — whose remains were found — but does not yet explain what happened to Landry after his vehicle crashed.
