PREGNANCY SPECULATION SURROUNDS OHIO MOTHER OF 16 AS ATTORNEY RAISES COMPETENCY CONCERNS

Questions surrounding Elizabeth Siders, the Ohio mother charged after 16 children were found living in what authorities described as deplorable conditions, have intensified following her latest court appearance.

Siders, 34, appeared in Vinton County court on September 16 and pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from the discovery of the children at the family home in Hamden.

She is also facing separate allegations involving sexual battery and unlawful sexual conduct with a minor.

During the hearing, Siders was seen holding her stomach, prompting questions about whether she might currently be pregnant.

Her attorney, Thomas Stolly, declined to confirm or deny the speculation.

“I can’t address that at this time,” Stolly said when asked whether his client was pregnant.

ATTORNEY RAISES CONCERNS ABOUT HER COMPETENCY

While the current pregnancy speculation remains unconfirmed, Stolly has provided details about Siders’ long history of pregnancies and limited medical care.

The attorney told the court that Siders married her husband, Gary Siders Jr., at the age of 15 and has been pregnant for much of the period since then.

He said she had “essentially been pregnant for the better part of two decades” and had not experienced a normal postpartum period or received what he considered appropriate regular medical care.

Stolly said those circumstances, combined with Siders’ upbringing and life within the family household, had led him to question whether she fully understands the legal proceedings against her.

“We have an individual … who has never fully gone through any postpartum period and has not been receiving regular medical care,” he told the court.

A competency evaluation has been requested and remains pending.

The evaluation is intended to determine whether Siders is capable of understanding the nature and consequences of the proceedings and assisting her attorney in her defense.

Stolly has stressed that raising competency concerns does not mean he is claiming that the allegations against his client have been disproved.

16 CHILDREN FOUND IN HAMDEN HOME

The case began on June 30, when authorities executed a court-authorized search warrant at a home on Ohmer Street in Hamden, a small community in Vinton County.

Investigators found 16 children, ranging in age from approximately 17 months to 18 years, inside the property.

Authorities said the children were living in unsafe and severely neglected conditions and were largely confined to a room measuring approximately 12 by 12 feet.

Some of the children required immediate medical treatment, with several hospitalized following their removal from the home.

The Ohio Attorney General’s Office said investigators believed the family had largely remained outside normal medical, educational and other government systems for years.

The children were removed from the property and placed into temporary state custody.

Authorities have continued investigating the circumstances surrounding their upbringing.

NEW SEXUAL-ABUSE CHARGES

In August, a Vinton County grand jury issued additional indictments against Siders and her husband.

Both were indicted on two counts of sexual battery and two counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor.

According to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, the allegations concern conduct between January and September 2022 involving a minor who was not one of the couple’s immediate children.

The indictment alleges that the defendants engaged in sexual conduct with a minor more than 10 years younger than themselves.

Both Siders and her husband have pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The allegations have not been proven in court, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless found guilty.

SIDER’S HISTORY OF PREGNANCIES

Court reporting has also revealed more information about Siders’ pregnancies.

Records obtained by local media indicate that she gave birth to a child in February 2022, around the period covered by the separate sexual-conduct allegations.

Records also indicate that she gave birth to twins in November 2022, who died shortly after birth.

Her attorney has cited the repeated pregnancies and lack of adequate medical and postpartum care as part of his concerns about her mental state and ability to participate meaningfully in her defense.

However, neither the court nor Siders’ attorney has publicly confirmed that she is currently pregnant.

COMPETENCY QUESTIONS COULD AFFECT THE CASE

Siders is not the only member of the family facing competency questions.

Her father-in-law, Gary Siders Sr., was recently found incompetent to stand trial after undergoing an evaluation. Her husband, Gary Siders Jr., and mother-in-law, Christina Siders, have also sought competency evaluations.

For Elizabeth Siders, the pending evaluation could become an important next step in the criminal proceedings.

Her attorney has argued that years of isolation, early marriage, repeated pregnancies and limited medical care may have affected her ability to understand her circumstances and make informed decisions.

Prosecutors, meanwhile, have continued to pursue the charges against her.

At this stage, there is no confirmed public evidence that Siders is currently pregnant.

What is confirmed is that she faces numerous criminal charges, that 16 children were removed from the Hamden home in June, and that her defense team is seeking an evaluation of her competency before the case moves further through the courts.

The investigation and legal proceedings remain ongoing.
