Early Morning Crisis Call Leads to Tragic Discovery in Pinal County Following Family Arrests

An early-morning emergency call in Pinal County led deputies to a tragic discovery just days after a missing teenager was found safe and his mother and stepfather were arrested on child-abuse charges.

Danielle Renae Lee-Sharp, 39, was found dead near Mammoth on September 27 from apparent self-inflicted injuries, according to the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office. She had been arrested days earlier in connection with a child-abuse investigation involving her three children.

The incident began around 4 a.m., when deputies received information about a man experiencing a mental-health crisis in the Mammoth area.

When deputies arrived, they found the man suffering from apparent self-inflicted injuries. He survived and was transported to a Tucson hospital, according to authorities.

Deputies then discovered Lee-Sharp nearby, also suffering from apparent self-inflicted injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Family Investigation Had Unfolded Days Earlier

Lee-Sharp’s death came only days after her 15-year-old son, Ryker Lee, was reported missing from the family’s Three Points-area home.

Deputies responding to the September 22 missing-person report said they uncovered evidence of alleged child abuse involving Ryker and his two younger siblings.

According to court documents cited by local news outlets, investigators alleged that Ryker had been confined inside a small, padlocked room in a recreational vehicle that lacked running water, restroom facilities and air conditioning.

His younger siblings, ages 8 and 10, were reportedly found inside the main residence in what investigators described as “deplorable” and “unsanitary” conditions.

Lee-Sharp and the children’s stepfather, 43-year-old Michael Aaron Menzie, were subsequently arrested and booked on three counts of child abuse.

The allegations remain allegations; neither arrest represents a conviction.

Ryker Was Found Safe

The search for Ryker continued for three days.

On September 25, a tip from a member of the public helped deputies locate the teenager about three miles from his home, near South Sierrita Mountain Road and West Ajo Highway.

He was found safe and, along with his two younger siblings, was placed in the custody of the Arizona Department of Child Safety.

The discovery brought an end to the immediate search, but the broader investigation continued.

Then, two days later, the case took another tragic turn.

One Major Question Remains

Authorities have not publicly identified the man who was found injured near Lee-Sharp.

Although Menzie had been arrested alongside Lee-Sharp earlier in the week, the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office specifically did not confirm whether he was the man found during the September 27 response.

That distinction remains important as investigators continue examining what happened.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that its investigators were in contact with the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office following Lee-Sharp’s death. Officials said Ryker and his siblings remained in state custody and that no additional information would be released while the investigation remained active.

For Ryker and his siblings, the story that began with a missing-child search has now entered a very different chapter.

Ryker was found alive.

His mother is dead.

His stepfather’s status remains tied to the ongoing criminal case.

And authorities have yet to publicly explain the full circumstances surrounding the early-morning incident near Mammoth.

Those unanswered questions are now at the center of the investigation.
