ONE SMALL GAP — THEN EVERYTHING CHANGED: REMEMBERING THREE-YEAR-OLD NOAH WOODS

Three-year-old Noah Woods was enjoying an ordinary afternoon at a playground when he slipped away through a gap in a fence — setting off a desperate search that brought more than 1,300 people together.

Noah had been visiting the under-fives play area in Merriam Close, Brantham, Suffolk, with a relative as part of what police described as his normal routine.

CCTV showed him playing with his relative before he left the play area through a gap in the fence, according to evidence heard at an inquest.

Police told the inquest that Noah left the play area and entered a memorial garden through an open gate.

He then went in the direction of nearby Decoy Pond.

His relative followed closely behind, trying to keep up with him.

But after roughly 200 metres, Noah could no longer be seen.

Police were called, and what would become a huge search operation began.

For Noah’s family, those moments marked the beginning of a nightmare no parent could imagine.

MORE THAN 1,300 PEOPLE JOINED THE SEARCH

News of Noah’s disappearance quickly spread throughout the local community.

Police officers, firefighters, coastguard teams, specialist search units and volunteers began searching Brantham and the surrounding area.

More than 1,300 members of the public joined the effort.

People came from nearby communities and further afield, putting on boots and spending hours searching for a little boy many of them had never met.

Suffolk Police later thanked the public for what it described as an extraordinary outpouring of support.

The following afternoon, Metropolitan Police divers searching Decoy Pond recovered the body of a child.

Police later confirmed that it was Noah.

His death was not being treated as suspicious, although the circumstances remained subject to further investigation and the inquest was opened and adjourned.

A postmortem examination was still awaiting a final medical cause of death at the time of the inquest.

The discovery devastated Noah’s family and the hundreds of people who had spent hours searching for him.

WHO NOAH WAS BEFORE THE HEADLINES

But Noah’s family does not want his story to be remembered only through the circumstances of his death.

They want people to remember the little boy who made them laugh.

The family described Noah as happy, cheeky and playful, a child who loved to laugh and giggle and brought joy wherever he went.

He lived with his parents and baby brother and was, they said, at the center of their world.

Noah was also being assessed for autism, although he had not received a diagnosis. He had mild hearing loss and was speech delayed.

His family said he was learning every day and had recently started finding and using his voice.

They said one of the things they would miss most was the unique sound of his voice.

HIS SPECIAL BOND WITH HIS LITTLE BROTHER

Noah adored his baby brother.

According to his family, he loved spending time with him, entertaining him and making him laugh.

He would follow his little brother around and always wanted to be close to him.

That bond is now one of the memories Noah’s family will carry with them forever.

His father, Rhys Woods, also described Noah as the “sweetest and most innocent little boy”, saying his son had nothing but love to give.

THE FAMILY’S FINAL MESSAGE

In their tribute, Noah’s family made one request.

They want his final memory to be one of joy.

They want people to remember him running, playing chase, laughing and being the happy little boy he was.

Not the search.

Not the pond.

Not the heartbreaking headlines.

Noah.

The family also thanked the emergency services, volunteers, local community and everyone who joined the search or offered support during the darkest days of their lives.

His mother, Charlie, asked people to hold their children a little tighter, cherish every moment and never take precious memories for granted.
