25-YEAR-OLD LEIRE SAN PEDRO DIES AFTER BULL CHARGES INTO FESTIVAL AREA IN SPAIN

A traditional festival in northern Spain has ended in tragedy after a 25-year-old woman died from injuries sustained when a bull broke through a barrier and entered an area near the festival stands.

Leire San Pedro, from Bilbao, was critically injured during the Toro con Soga event in Lodosa, Navarra, on September 27. She remained in intensive care for five days before her death was confirmed on October 2.

The incident happened during Lodosa’s traditional Toro con Soga, an event in which a bull is guided through the streets with a long rope attached to its horns.

According to local reports, the bull unexpectedly moved into a narrow passage between a wooden barrier and temporary spectator stands.

Leire was in the area when the bull reached the spectators. She suffered a severe head injury and was taken urgently to the Hospital Universitario de Navarra.

Another woman was also injured in the incident.

Leire remained in intensive care following the accident.

Local newspaper Diario de Navarra reported that she suffered a traumatic brain injury and was in a state of brain death before she died on October 2.

Her death prompted an outpouring of grief in Lodosa, Bilbao and Laguardia, where she also had family connections.

The Lodosa City Council announced two days of official mourning and expressed its condolences to her family and loved ones.

A minute of silence was also planned in her memory.

SHE WAS MORE THAN A SPECTATOR

Leire was not simply someone who happened to attend the festival.

She was a passionate supporter of bull-related traditions and belonged to the Peña Lodosa por el Toro, a local association connected with the Toro con Soga tradition.

She had developed a strong connection with Lodosa through her interest in the event.

She had also studied teaching in Bilbao, according to local reports.

The association remembered her as an important member of its community and said she would remain part of its history and memories.

“YOU LEFT YOUR MARK”

Leire’s death prompted emotional tributes from the people who knew her.

The Club Taurino de Laguardia described her as someone who brought joy, vitality and affection to those around her.

The club said she had the ability to spread happiness and fill every moment with life.

Her friends and fellow members of the bullfighting community remembered the young woman for her energy and passion.

For those who shared the tradition with her, the tragedy has left a painful absence.

A THOUSAND PEOPLE GATHER TO REMEMBER HER

On October 4, around 1,000 people gathered in Lodosa to honor Leire.

Flowers were placed in her memory, while members of her association wore black ribbons during the ceremony.

A minute of silence followed emotional words from local officials and representatives of the Peña Lodosa por el Toro.

The gathering took place near the monument dedicated to the Toro con Soga — close to the location associated with the festival she loved.

For the town, the event became not a celebration, but a moment of collective mourning.

A COMMUNITY LEFT TO REMEMBER

Leire’s death has brought renewed attention to the risks surrounding traditional bull-running events in Spain.

People.com reported that her death was the sixth bull-related fatality recorded in Spain this year.

But for her family, friends and the community of Lodosa, the statistics cannot capture the loss of a 25-year-old woman whose life was still ahead of her.

She was a student, a friend, a passionate member of her community and someone remembered for bringing happiness to those around her.

Now, the people who knew her are left with memories — and a town united in saying goodbye.
