13-YEAR-OLD OLViN CABRERA VALLADARES DIES AFTER TRAGIC PLAYGROUND INCIDENT IN MIAMI

His mother says his shirt became caught inside a playground slide. Now, as the city investigates, a grieving family is demanding answers.

A 13-year-old Miami boy has died after being found unconscious inside a playground slide at Shenandoah Park, leaving his family devastated and raising new questions about the safety of public playground equipment.

Olvin Daniel Cabrera Valladares was found inside the slide on September 25, according to his family. He was rushed to a hospital, where doctors fought to save his life.

Six days later, on October 1, Olvin was declared brain dead, his family said.

His mother, Estefanía Valladares, is now mourning her youngest son while asking how such a tragedy could have happened.

A 13-year-old boy went down an enclosed playground slide and somehow never made it back out. His family says Olvin Daniel Cabrera Valladares' T-shirt became caught on a screw inside the slide,A MORNING THAT STARTED LIKE ANY OTHER

Olvin was a student at Miami’s Citrus Grove K-8 Center.

His mother said he left home on the morning of September 25 as he normally would.

She remembered saying goodbye to her son with a kiss and a hug.

But Olvin did not make it to school.

Instead, according to his family, he rode his scooter to Shenandoah Park in Miami’s Coral Way neighborhood.

Later that day, a man who had brought his own children to the park discovered the teenager inside one of the playground slides.

The man’s account, as relayed by Olvin’s mother, was that the boy’s shirt had become caught on a screw inside the slide.

“He told me he pulled on him, but he was caught on a screw,” Valladares told local media. She said the man pulled again and Olvin came free, with his arm inside his shirt and his collar tight around his neck.

The man called for help and began providing first aid before emergency responders arrived.

Paramedics continued efforts to save Olvin before taking him to the hospital.

Heartbreak as boy, 13, found lifeless on Miami playground as screw causes freak death - AOLSIX DAYS OF HOPE

For Olvin’s family, the days that followed were filled with uncertainty and hope.

Doctors and medical staff worked to keep the teenager alive.

His sister, Stephany Valladares, later wrote in a GoFundMe campaign that the family prayed for a miracle while Olvin remained in medical care.

But on October 1, the family received devastating news.

Olvin was declared brain dead, according to the family fundraiser and multiple reports.

His mother said the loss was almost impossible to comprehend.

“He was my baby, my youngest, just 13 years old. He had his whole life ahead of him,” she told local media.

“He just wanted to play.”

Those words have become central to the family’s grief.

Olvin was only 13.

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE PLAYGROUND

The tragedy has now prompted an investigation into what happened at Shenandoah Park.

The City of Miami temporarily closed the park after Olvin was found unconscious. Officials described the closure as part of a non-criminal investigation.

The park later reopened.

That decision has caused concern among some local residents and parents, particularly because the incident involved playground equipment that children continue to use.

Residents have called for a broader safety review, while Miami District 3 Commissioner Rolando Escalona has requested a thorough investigation into the incident and a review of playground equipment throughout the city’s parks.

“The matter is under investigation,” a city spokesperson said, according to local reports, declining to provide further details while officials work to establish the facts.

Importantly, authorities have not publicly confirmed that a defective screw caused Olvin’s death. That detail comes from his mother and family members, and the circumstances remain under investigation.

A MOTHER’S WARNING TO OTHER PARENTS

As she struggles with the loss of her youngest child, Estefanía has turned her grief into a warning for other families.

She urged parents to pay close attention to playground equipment and to be cautious when their children are using public parks.

Her concern is simple: she does not want another family to experience what hers is going through.

“Today it was my boy, but tomorrow it could be someone else’s child,” she said, according to CBS Miami.

For residents who live near Shenandoah Park, the tragedy has also changed the way they view the playground.

Some have questioned whether the equipment should have remained accessible after the incident and have called for additional inspections and safety improvements.

A FAMILY TRYING TO SAY GOODBYE

Olvin’s sudden death has also left his family facing funeral expenses while they attempt to process what happened.

His sister Stephany created a GoFundMe campaign asking for help with funeral and final expenses.

The fundraiser describes Olvin as a beloved younger brother whose family had hoped and prayed for his recovery.

“Always loved and never forgotten,” the family wrote in their appeal.

Photographs shared by the family show Olvin smiling with relatives and posing for family pictures.

They offer a glimpse of the teenager beyond the tragedy now surrounding his name.

He was a son.

A brother.

A student.

And, to his mother, her youngest child.

THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES

The City of Miami has said the case remains under investigation as officials work to establish exactly what happened inside the slide.

Commissioner Escalona has also called for playground equipment across the city to be reviewed.

For now, there are still unanswered questions about the equipment, the circumstances surrounding Olvin’s injury and whether anything could have prevented the tragedy.

His family is left waiting for those answers.

But while the investigation continues, Estefanía wants people to remember something beyond the headlines.

Her son was only 13.

He left home that morning expecting an ordinary day.

He never came home.

And now a grieving mother is asking for answers — not only for Olvin, but potentially for every child who will play on a public playground tomorrow.
