NEWBORN BABY MARIA SKOPOVA’S DEATH: FOUR PEOPLE CHARGED WITH MURDER AS TRIAL DATE IS SET
A newborn girl died on the day she was born in Sheffield, England. Four adults have been charged in connection with her death, while a 15-year-old girl faces a separate charge. The case has left relatives in tears as the legal proceedings move forward.
A tragic case involving the death of a newborn baby in Sheffield has prompted a major criminal investigation, with four adults charged with murder and a trial scheduled for 2027.
The baby, identified in later reporting as Maria Skopova, was found dead at a property in the Wincobank area of Sheffield on August 30, 2026. Court proceedings have revealed disturbing details about the circumstances in which she was discovered, while prosecutors have outlined the charges facing those accused.
The defendants have not entered pleas, and the allegations against them have yet to be tested at trial.
Four adults charged in connection with the baby’s death
Andrea Skopova, 20, Peter Horvath Jr., 19, Peter Horvath Sr., 38, and Nina Horvathova, 37, have all been charged with murder.
The four defendants are Slovakian nationals. Court reports identify Skopova as the baby’s mother. Peter Horvath Jr. is her boyfriend and the son of the other two adult defendants, although prosecutors told an earlier hearing that he was not believed to be the baby’s father.
All four adults also face charges of causing or allowing the death of a child and perverting the course of justice. Prosecutors allege that steps were taken to conceal what had happened, including cleaning the scene.
A 15-year-old girl has separately been charged with perverting the course of justice. Her identity cannot legally be published because of her age.
The charges are allegations, and each defendant is entitled to the presumption of innocence unless and until proven guilty.
What the court heard about the discovery
Emergency services were called to an address in Holywell Heights on August 30 after concerns were raised about the safety of an infant.
At an earlier hearing at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court, prosecutor Luke Hopkinson told the court that the baby was found wrapped in a towel inside a blue bag, on top of a washing machine in an outbuilding at the property.
The court heard that Maria had suffered 33 wounds from 15 separate stabbing incidents, with injuries to her face and torso.
A post-mortem examination later established that the newborn had died from stab wounds, according to court reporting.
The circumstances described in court have shocked the local community. Flowers and tributes were left near the property as news of the investigation spread.
The investigation began after hospital staff raised concerns
According to evidence presented in court, Skopova gave birth at a property in Sheffield in the early hours of August 30. The baby was believed to have been born at 37 weeks of pregnancy.
Skopova subsequently attended hospital. Medical staff raised concerns and alerted police shortly after 5 a.m.
Officers initially attended an address but the baby was not there. They then went to a property in Holywell Heights, where the infant was found.
The investigation led to charges against the four adults and the teenage girl. Two other women, aged 26 and 37, who were arrested on suspicion of murder, were reported to remain on bail as enquiries continued.
Police have stressed the importance of allowing the investigation and court process to proceed without speculation that could prejudice the case.
Emotional scenes as defendants appear in court
The defendants appeared at Sheffield Crown Court as the proceedings continued in September and October.
Court reports described emotional scenes, with Skopova and the teenage defendant crying during an earlier hearing. Family members were also present in the public gallery.
Interpreters were required for the defendants, and security staff accompanied them in court.
At the October 2 hearing, no pleas were entered. The defendants were remanded in custody, and a further hearing was scheduled for December 14.
The court has set a trial date of April 12, 2027. Proceedings are expected to last approximately six to seven weeks.
An inquest into Maria’s death has also been opened and adjourned while the criminal case proceeds.
A case that will continue into 2027
The investigation into Maria Skopova’s death remains a deeply distressing case for everyone affected. The court proceedings will determine what evidence can be established about the events surrounding her birth and death, and whether the prosecution can prove the charges against those accused.
For now, the four adult defendants remain in custody, and the teenage defendant remains subject to separate youth-court arrangements. No verdict has been reached.
As the case moves towards trial, the central questions will be addressed through evidence presented in court rather than speculation online.
Maria’s death has prompted grief and concern in Sheffield. The coming hearings will be an important step in establishing the facts and determining legal responsibility.
