Nearly six years after Texas State University student Jason Landry vanished while driving home for Christmas, his family finally knows what happened to the missing 21-year-old.

Human remains discovered in Caldwell County, Texas, earlier this month have been positively identified as Jason Landry, authorities confirmed.

DNA testing by the University of North Texas Center for Human Identification established the identification after a local resident discovered the remains on September 8, 2026.

But while the discovery has brought an end to one of the longest-running questions surrounding Landry’s disappearance, it has not answered the biggest one: how did he die?

JASON DISAPPEARED ON HIS WAY HOME

Landry was 21 and studying at Texas State University when he left San Marcos on the night of December 13, 2020.

He was driving toward his family’s home in Missouri City, Texas, for the Christmas holiday.

He never made it home.

Shortly after midnight, his Nissan Altima was discovered crashed and abandoned on Salt Flat Road near Luling, in Caldwell County.

Landry was nowhere to be found.

His personal belongings, including clothing, were discovered around the crash scene, triggering an extensive search involving law enforcement, professional search teams and volunteers.

THE SEARCH CONTINUED FOR YEARS

The circumstances surrounding the abandoned vehicle made Landry’s disappearance particularly difficult for investigators and his family.

Search teams repeatedly combed the surrounding rural area, while volunteers continued looking for clues long after the initial search ended.

The Texas Attorney General’s Cold Case and Missing Persons Unit joined the investigation in 2022.

Over the following years, investigators conducted additional ground and aerial searches, reviewed new leads and worked with the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Department of Public Safety and Texas Search and Rescue.

But no trace of Landry was found.

His family continued to hope for answers while marking each anniversary of his disappearance.

A DISCOVERY NEAR LULING

Then, on September 8, 2026, a local resident discovered human remains east of Salt Flat Road, between Soda Springs and Biggs Road.

The location was in the broader area connected to Landry’s disappearance but outside the established search area used during the years-long investigation.

The remains were sent for forensic examination.

For several days, authorities did not publicly identify the person.

Investigators urged the public not to speculate while testing and examination continued.

The breakthrough eventually came through DNA.

DNA CONFIRMS THE WORST FEAR

The University of North Texas Center for Human Identification confirmed that the remains belonged to Jason Landry.

The Texas Attorney General’s Office announced the identification on September 23.

After nearly six years of searching, Landry had finally been found.

His family was notified of the identification, and authorities asked the public to respect their privacy as they process the news.

For those who had spent years searching for him, the discovery brought a painful form of closure.

A representative of the Jason Landry Search Team described the moment as both somber and deeply meaningful, noting that volunteers had devoted years to helping bring him home.

BUT HOW DID JASON DIE?

The discovery of Landry’s remains has not solved the entire case.

According to the Texas Attorney General’s Office, the skeletal remains do not provide additional insight into the cause or manner of death.

Investigators have also found no indication of foul play at this stage.

That means authorities have not publicly established whether Landry died as a result of the 2020 crash, exposure, an accident after leaving the crash site or another circumstance.

Those possibilities should not be treated as conclusions.

The investigation remains open.

THE SEARCH AREA HAS RAISED QUESTIONS

The location where Landry’s remains were discovered has also drawn attention because it was outside the established search area.

One search volunteer told FOX 7 that drone teams had extensively examined their designated area during the original investigation, but the newly discovered remains were roughly a mile beyond that established search zone, according to his account.

That detail may add to the questions investigators and Landry’s supporters have carried for years.

However, authorities have not said that the location indicates what happened to Landry or why he was not found earlier.
