“I WISH I COULD HAVE HAD JUST ONE MORE DAY WITH MY CHILDREN” — ROB BURROW’S HEARTBREAKING FINAL CHAPTER REVEALS A LOVE THAT NEVER FADED

LEEDS, ENGLAND — He spent years tackling some of rugby league’s toughest opponents, winning championships and earning the admiration of thousands of fans. But the greatest battle of Rob Burrow’s life was one he could never win.

The former Leeds Rhinos star died on June 2, 2024, at just 41 years old, after a four-and-a-half-year battle with motor neurone disease (MND). Behind his sporting achievements was a devoted husband and father whose greatest happiness came from the simple moments he shared with his family.

And as the disease gradually took away his ability to move, speak and communicate normally, one thing remained at the centre of his world: his wife Lindsey and their three children.

Rob and Lindsey Burrow had known each other since they were teenagers. Their relationship began when they were young, long before the world knew Rob as a rugby league legend.

They married in 2006 and built a family together, welcoming three children: Macy, Maya and Jackson.

For Lindsey, Rob was not simply a famous athlete. He was her childhood sweetheart, her husband, her best friend and the person with whom she had imagined growing old.

But everything changed in December 2019.

At just 37, Rob received the devastating diagnosis of motor neurone disease, a progressive condition that affects the nerves controlling movement. Doctors initially warned that he might have only two years to live.

The news changed everything for the young family.

As Rob’s condition progressed, everyday activities became increasingly difficult.

The once energetic rugby player gradually lost the ability to walk, speak and move independently. Eventually, he relied on eye-tracking technology to communicate with the people he loved.

The technology allowed him to select letters and words by moving his eyes, turning his gaze into a way of expressing thoughts that he could no longer speak aloud.

Even as his physical world became smaller, his determination to remain involved in his children’s lives never disappeared.

Rob and Lindsey continued creating memories together, while Lindsey took on the enormous responsibility of caring for her husband and raising their three children.

She later described how much she missed the ordinary conversations they once shared, from discussing the children to talking about their everyday lives.

Yet she remained by his side through the most difficult chapters of his illness.

THE MESSAGE THAT BROKE LINDSEY’S HEART

In April 2024, as his condition became increasingly difficult, Rob sent Lindsey a message that she would never forget.

Using his communication technology, he wrote:

“I’m finding it hard to fight MND.”

Those seven words deeply affected Lindsey. She had always known how difficult the disease was, but seeing her husband express his exhaustion in that way made the reality even more painful.

She encouraged him to keep fighting, reminding him of his strength.

Rob responded using his eyes, turning his gaze to the left — their agreed signal for yes.

For Lindsey, even that small response carried enormous meaning.

HIS FINAL DAYS WERE FILLED WITH FAMILY MEMORIES

In the final days of Rob’s life, the family focused on making the moments they had left together as meaningful as possible.

One of the most emotional memories came the night before his death.

Lindsey arranged for a DVD player to be brought into his hospital room so they could watch their wedding video one final time.

The footage showed the young couple celebrating their wedding in 2006, dancing together to their favourite song.

It was a reminder of the life they had built and the love that had carried them through so many years.

Their children, Macy, Maya and Jackson, also spent precious time with their father.

The children painted his fingers with colourful ink and created fingerprint artwork to preserve a lasting memory of him.

Lindsey later recalled how Rob smiled while watching recordings of his daughters performing in a show they had spent months preparing for.

Even in his final hours, seeing his children happy brought him joy.

He wanted to spend as much time with them as he could.

THE MOMENT LINDSEY KNEW HE WAS READY TO REST

One of the most painful moments came when Rob was in hospital with pneumonia and his condition had deteriorated further.

Unable to speak or communicate normally, he relied on his eyes to answer questions.

Lindsey gently asked whether he was tired and whether he had had enough.

Rob looked to the left.

It was their signal for yes.

Lindsey later recalled holding her husband in her arms for a long time until he fell asleep.

She knew how much he had fought, but accepting what that moment meant was devastating.

Rob passed away on June 2, 2024, surrounded by the love of those closest to him.

HIS FINAL MESSAGE TO THE WORLD

Before his death, Rob recorded a special message that he wanted released only after he was gone.

It was included in the BBC documentary There’s Only One Rob Burrow.

In the emotional recording, he reflected on his life, his family and his battle with MND.

He spoke about being a father of three young children and said he would never want another family to experience what his own had endured following his diagnosis.

He also shared his hope that one day researchers would find a cure for the disease.

His final words carried a message that reached far beyond the rugby community:

“Every single day is precious. Don’t waste a moment.”

He signed off:

“Rob Burrow, over and out.”

A WIFE DETERMINED TO KEEP HIS LEGACY ALIVE

Following Rob’s passing, Lindsey shared a heartfelt tribute to the man she had loved since her teenage years.

She described him as a loving, kind and caring husband and father, expressing how proud she was of his determination to raise awareness of MND.

She also promised to continue bringing up their three children as Rob would have wanted, ensuring their happiness and wellbeing.

In February 2025, Lindsey shared more intimate details of their life together in her memoir, Take Care: A Memoir of Love, Family & Never Giving Up.

Through her words, the world learned more about the private struggles behind Rob’s public courage, including the loneliness, the difficult decisions and the final moments they shared.

Rob’s sporting achievements made him a household name, but his story became something much bigger.

Together with his close friend and former teammate Kevin Sinfield, he helped raise millions of pounds for MND research and support, bringing international attention to a disease that affects thousands of families.

His legacy continues through his family, the charitable work carried out in his name and the people inspired by his determination.

For Lindsey, however, the greatest loss is much more personal.

It is the husband she can no longer call after a difficult day, the father her children cannot physically turn to, and the childhood sweetheart with whom she once dreamed of growing old.

Rob Burrow may have lost his final battle, but the love he gave his family remains.

He was a rugby legend to the world. To Lindsey, Macy, Maya and Jackson, he was simply Dad. ❤️
