BRITISH SOLDIER RAISES £160K TO SAVE BOY WITH SEVERE CRANIOFACIAL CONDITION AND ONE WORKING AIRWAY

When British Army Sergeant Wayne Ingram first saw a photograph of four-year-old Stefan Slavic during a military deployment in Bosnia, he couldn’t stop thinking about the little boy.
Amid the devastation of the Balkan conflict, thousands of families were struggling to access even basic medical care. But one image stood out to the soldier — a young child born with a severe craniofacial condition that had dramatically affected the structure of his face and threatened his ability to breathe.

Doctors warned that Stefan had only one functional airway, placing him at constant risk of serious respiratory complications. In a region overwhelmed by conflict and limited medical resources, the specialized treatment he desperately needed was far beyond his family’s reach.
For many, the story might have ended there.
But Sergeant Ingram made a promise.

Determined to give the boy a chance at a better future, he began raising money to fund the life-changing surgeries Stefan required. What started as an effort to collect enough for one operation quickly grew into a remarkable humanitarian campaign.
With support from people across the United Kingdom and beyond, the fundraising effort eventually raised around £160,000.
The money allowed Stefan to undergo five complex reconstructive surgeries performed by specialist craniofacial teams.

Each operation lasted up to 12 hours and required months of recovery.
“It was the start of a completely different battle,” Wayne later recalled. “There were setbacks, uncertainty, and long periods of rehabilitation. But Stefan never stopped fighting.”
Throughout the years, the British sergeant remained by the boy’s side, supporting him through every stage of treatment and recovery.
As Stefan grew older, additional procedures were performed to accommodate his development and improve both function and appearance.

Today, the little boy once facing overwhelming challenges has grown into a confident 26-year-old man.
He works full-time, performs as a keyboard player in a folk music band, and enjoys a happy, stable relationship.
Those who know him say he has refused to let his early struggles define the person he became.
“He has become the young man he always dreamed of being,” Wayne said proudly.

More than two decades after their lives first crossed paths, the bond between the former soldier and the Bosnian boy remains as strong as ever.
In an emotional letter, Stefan thanked the man who changed the course of his life.
“You changed my life completely,” he wrote. “I love you, my friend, forever. Words cannot express my gratitude.”
For Wayne, the letter was a powerful reminder of why he made that promise all those years ago.
“I only wanted to help a child who needed a chance,” he said. “Seeing the life Stefan has built is more than I could ever have hoped for.”
