A New York couple are facing serious charges after authorities investigating the death of a young puppy allegedly uncovered disturbing living conditions inside their home.

Stephen Andres, 42, and Tara Andres, 44, of Lackawanna, New York, have been indicted on felony animal cruelty and child endangerment charges following an investigation that began with what appeared to be a routine request for assistance.

According to officials, the case was triggered when Stephen Andres contacted the SPCA seeking help removing a puppy that had died inside the residence.

But what investigators say they discovered upon entering the property left even seasoned officers deeply concerned.

Inside the home, authorities found a 10-month-old puppy named Bones that had already passed away. Following a veterinary examination, officials determined the young dog’s death was most likely linked to prolonged and severe malnourishment.

Investigators also located another dog, a seven-year-old pet named Diamond, who was still alive but reportedly in extremely poor physical condition.

Animal welfare officers immediately removed Diamond from the property and arranged emergency veterinary care. The dog has since been placed in a new home and is said to be recovering well.

The investigation took an even more troubling turn when authorities discovered a child living in the same environment.

Prosecutors allege that the residence contained unsanitary and hazardous conditions, leading to additional child endangerment charges against the couple.

Photos and details presented during the investigation reportedly painted a picture of a home that authorities believed posed serious concerns for both animals and people living there.

“No animal should suffer because of neglect,” one animal welfare advocate said. “Pets depend entirely on their owners for care, protection, and compassion.”

Court documents show both Stephen and Tara Andres have been released under supervision while the case proceeds through the legal system.

As part of a court order, neither individual is currently permitted to own, possess, or have custody of animals while legal proceedings remain ongoing.

Meanwhile, animal welfare supporters continue to remember Bones, the young puppy whose death ultimately led authorities to investigate the property.

Advocates hope the heartbreaking case will raise awareness about the importance of reporting suspected neglect and encourage people to seek help when animals or children may be living in unsafe conditions.

“Bones deserved better,” one supporter said. “If sharing his story helps protect even one other animal, then his life will not be forgotten.”
