Boy, 11, Adopted by His Elementary School Teacher: ‘I Got a Mom!’

In a heartwarming story out of Florida, substitute teacher Jackie Coombe has officially adopted her former student, 11-year-old Jaden, after a two-year journey filled with care, patience, and love.
Jackie first met Jaden in October 2023 while teaching at Pathways Elementary School in Ormond Beach. She immediately noticed his bright smile and sparkling personality. As she continued teaching in his classroom, the two formed a special bond.

The following spring, Jackie learned that Jaden was in foster care. Moved by his situation, she decided to take the significant step of beginning the adoption process — completing extensive paperwork, background checks, and all the requirements involved.
On June 10, 2026, the adoption was finalized in court. During the hearing, Circuit Court Judge Joan Anthony declared Jaden as part of the Coombe family, officially changing his name to Jaden Andrew Coombe.

The emotional moment reached its peak when Jaden, beaming with joy, simply said: “I got a mom!”
Jackie shared that Jaden was placed in her permanent care in December 2025, and their relationship has only grown stronger since. Her father and adult son were also present at the hearing to celebrate the new addition to the family.
A spokesperson for Pathways Elementary praised the story, saying it reflects the dedication of educators and shows how a classroom connection can blossom into a forever family.
This touching adoption highlights the profound impact teachers can have on their students’ lives — sometimes becoming the family they need most.
