Sage Borelli was just 2 years old when her dadโ€™s wife was accused of pouring extremely hot water on her, leaving the little girl with severe third-degree burns to her genital area, thighs, and lower back.

According to investigators, Sage was taken to Palm Bay Hospital, where it was initially reported that the injuries happened after she was left unattended in a bathtub. However, following an investigation, authorities concluded the incident was not accidental and alleged that hot water had been poured over the child. The allegations remain part of an ongoing criminal case, and the accused continues to maintain that the injuries were accidental.

Because of the seriousness of her condition, Sage was transferred to Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando, where specialists worked tirelessly to care for her.

During her lengthy hospital stay, she underwent several complex medical procedures designed to help her body recover. After months of treatment, she also had to relearn basic daily functions through extensive rehabilitation.

Officials said in a news release that the injuries were “significant and likely to result in long-term physical changes, if not reduced sensation, according to physicians.”

During the course of the investigation, police determined the incident was not accidental. One factor that led them to that conclusion was the pattern of the burns, which they said was consistent with water being poured on Sage. In addition to the burns, she also had a broken wrist and fresh bruising on parts of her body, leading investigators to believe she tried to protect herself while the water was being poured.

Sage spent months recovering and had to relearn basic functions, including how to use the bathroom after the catheter and colostomy were removed. She has undergone extensive therapy and is expected to need additional procedures as she grows and her scar tissue stretches.

Today, Sage is able to run, play, and enjoy time outdoors, but her mother, Alexandra Torres, said the physical and emotional impact of her injuries remains a daily challenge, as Sage continues to experience pain in the areas that were burned. She will eventually need reconstructive surgery, which is not covered by insurance.

“She is so incredibly strong,” her mother shared. “Every day she reminds me what courage looks like. She keeps smiling even after everything she has been through.”

The legal case remains ongoing.

Angela Mayton has been charged with aggravated child abuse resulting in bodily injury. Her attorney continues to maintain that the injuries were accidental.

Meanwhile, supporters who had organized fundraising efforts to help with Sage’s future medical needs recently announced they would close the campaign and refund donations, citing complications surrounding the ongoing legal proceedings.

Despite the uncertainty, one thing has never changedโ€”the hope that Sage will continue to recover, both physically and emotionally.

Her journey has become a powerful reminder of the remarkable resilience a child can show in the face of overwhelming challenges, and of a mother’s unwavering determination to help her daughter build the brightest future possible.
