18-YEAR-OLD FOOTBALL STAR DIES AFTER JUMPING INTO FLOODED RIVER — FAMILY’S HOPE ENDS IN HEARTBREAK
An Indiana family is mourning the loss of 18-year-old Matthew Morey, a talented young football player whose life was cut short during devastating Midwest flooding.
Morey had recently graduated from Delta High School and was preparing to begin a new chapter at Purdue University this fall.
Instead, his family is now facing an unimaginable goodbye.
A DANGEROUS RIVER
According to authorities, Morey and three friends entered the Mississinewa River near Muncie on Wednesday as severe flooding swept through central Indiana.
The three other young people were rescued.
Morey did not make it out.
Because of the dangerous flood conditions, rescue efforts were temporarily suspended, leaving his family waiting desperately for news.
His body was eventually recovered over the weekend.
HIS MOTHER NEVER GAVE UP HOPE
As the search continued, Matthew’s mother, Angie Morey, remained hopeful that her son might still be alive.
She told NBC News that she desperately wanted to reach him herself but could not safely get into the flooded area.
Her family was forced to wait while dangerous conditions prevented rescuers from reaching every part of the river.
That wait ultimately ended with devastating news.
A YOUNG LIFE JUST BEGINNING
Matthew was remembered as a football standout and recent high-school graduate.
He was preparing to leave for college and begin what should have been an exciting new chapter.
Instead, his name has now become part of the growing list of victims caught in one of the Midwest’s most dangerous flooding events in years.
THE FLOODS HAVE TAKEN MULTIPLE LIVES
Morey was among at least six people reported killed in the severe flooding across Indiana.
Authorities also reported deaths involving a young child and a woman who was swept away after driving into floodwaters.
More than a dozen Indiana counties declared disaster emergencies, while hundreds of homes were evacuated.
The scale of the flooding has prompted federal emergency assistance, underscoring just how dangerous conditions became across the region.
A FAMILY LEFT WITH QUESTIONS
It remains unclear why Morey and his friends entered the swollen river while flooding was occurring.
But for his family, that question cannot change the outcome.
Matthew was only 18 years old.
He had just graduated.
He had plans for college.
He had a future waiting for him.
Now, his family, teammates, classmates and friends are left remembering the young man he was — rather than the future he should have had.
A FOOTBALL PLAYER.
A RECENT GRADUATE.
A SON.
A YOUNG LIFE LOST IN A RAGING RIVER.
JUST 18 YEARS OLD.
Matthew’s death is another heartbreaking reminder of how quickly floodwaters can turn familiar places into deadly environments.
