Luigi Mangione Acknowledges Role in Killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson

Luigi Mangione Pleads Guilty in Federal Case Over Brian Thompson’s Killing

Luigi Mangione, 28, pleaded guilty in federal court in Manhattan in connection with the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

During the hearing, Mangione directly admitted to the shooting, stating: “I shot Mr. Thompson, and he died.”

However, Mangione did not plead guilty to a federal murder charge. Instead, he pleaded guilty to two federal counts of stalking resulting in death.

The shooting occurred on December 4, 2024, in Manhattan, where Thompson was fatally shot.

Mangione’s guilty plea resolves the federal charges but does not end the separate criminal case against him in New York State. He continues to face state murder charges related to Thompson’s death.

His attorneys have sought to have the state case dismissed, arguing that continuing the prosecution could violate the constitutional protection against double jeopardy. That issue remains unresolved.

Mangione’s federal sentencing is currently scheduled for December 18, 2026. Federal prosecutors are seeking a life sentence, while the defense will have an opportunity to present its arguments regarding the appropriate punishment.

The case has attracted widespread attention since Thompson’s death, with the federal and state prosecutions proceeding separately.

Mangione’s admission in federal court establishes his responsibility for the conduct covered by his guilty plea, while the separate New York State murder case remains subject to further court proceedings and rulings.
