HUMAN REMAINS FOUND IN ARIZONA DESERT ABOUT 15 MILES FROM NANCY GUTHRIE’S HOME

Nancy Guthrie: Person of interest released as search for suspect continues | FOX 10 PhoenixTUCSON, ARIZONA — Investigators responding to a report of human remains in a remote Arizona desert area are working to determine the identity of the person, after the discovery was made roughly 15 miles from the home of missing 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie.

The discovery immediately drew attention because Guthrie has been missing since January, and authorities have been investigating her disappearance as a suspected abduction.

But officials are urging the public not to jump to conclusions.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department said there is currently no indication that the remains are connected to the Nancy Guthrie investigation. Authorities also said the remains appear to have been at the location for an extended period of time.

REMAINS DISCOVERED IN SOUTHERN TUCSON

According to the sheriff’s department, the remains were reported in a desert area near West Ajo Way and South La Cholla Boulevard, southwest of Tucson.

Pima County Search and Rescue deputies responded to the location as investigators began assessing the discovery.

Officials have not publicly identified the person whose remains were found.

They also have not released a cause or manner of death.

Those details will depend on the forensic examination and identification process now underway.

The sheriff’s department’s initial assessment that the remains had likely been at the location for an extended period was another reason authorities cautioned against immediately connecting the discovery to Guthrie’s disappearance.

Savannah Guthrie's Missing Mom Nancy Is 'in Jeopardy,' Sheriff AdmitsNANCY GUTHRIE HAS BEEN MISSING SINCE JANUARY

Nancy Guthrie, the mother of Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, disappeared from her Tucson-area home on January 31, 2026.

Investigators have said evidence found at the residence indicated that Guthrie was likely taken against her will.

The FBI later became involved in the investigation.

The agency is seeking information about an unidentified man captured on surveillance footage around the time of Guthrie’s disappearance and is offering a reward of up to $100,000 for information leading to her location or the arrest and conviction of anyone responsible.

Despite months of investigative work, Nancy has not been located.

RANSOM NOTES ADDED TO THE MYSTERY

The investigation became even more complicated after two ransom notes were sent to media organizations following Guthrie’s disappearance.

One message demanded money in exchange for her return.

A later note claimed that Nancy had died shortly after being taken and that her body had been buried somewhere in nature.

Authorities have not publicly verified the claims made in those messages.

The discovery of human remains in the desert therefore naturally raises questions about whether investigators may have found a connection—but there is currently no evidence establishing one.

That distinction is critical.

AUTHORITIES ARE NOT CALLING THIS A BREAKTHROUGH

For investigators, the immediate priority is identifying the deceased person.

That means determining:

  • Who the person was
  • How long the remains had been at the location
  • How the person died
  • Whether there is any connection to an existing missing-person investigation

At this stage, authorities have not said that any of those questions has been answered.

The discovery should therefore not be described as evidence that Nancy Guthrie has been found.

Instead, it represents a separate forensic investigation occurring while the Guthrie case remains active.

THE SEARCH FOR NANCY CONTINUES

Nancy’s disappearance has generated a nationwide response because of her connection to Savannah Guthrie, one of the most recognizable faces in American television news.

Her family has continued pleading for information about her whereabouts.

A $1 million family reward has also been offered for information that helps locate Nancy.

The FBI continues to list her as a missing person and is asking anyone with information about the unidentified individual seen near her home to come forward.

ONE DISCOVERY, TWO VERY DIFFERENT QUESTIONS

The Arizona desert discovery may eventually provide answers about the identity and death of the person whose remains were found.

But whether it tells investigators anything about Nancy Guthrie is a completely different question.

For now, authorities say there is “no indication” of a connection.

That could change if forensic testing produces new information—but investigators have not announced such evidence.

For Nancy’s family, the central mystery therefore remains exactly where it was before the latest discovery:

Where is Nancy Guthrie?

And what happened to her after she disappeared from her home in January?

Those questions remain unanswered.

As investigators process the newly discovered remains and continue working the Guthrie case, authorities are asking the public to rely on confirmed information rather than speculation.

Nancy Guthrie has not been found, and no connection between the remains and her disappearance has been established.

This is a developing investigation. The discovery of human remains does not currently indicate that they belong to Nancy Guthrie. Identification, cause of death and any possible connection to other cases remain under investigation.
