HUMAN REMAINS FOUND NEAR PALOMAR MOUNTAIN — BUT AUTHORITIES SAY THEY ARE NOT BELIEVED TO BE ANGELICA BROPHY

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CALIFORNIA — The disappearance of Southern California mother and emergency-room nurse Angelica Brophy has taken another unsettling turn after human remains were discovered near Palomar Mountain, the same general area where investigators have been searching for her.

But authorities are stressing an important distinction: the remains are not currently believed to be Brophy.

A volunteer search-and-rescue team discovered the remains Wednesday, August 12, in an embankment near the 33000 block of South Grade Road in Pauma Valley, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office. The location is less than three miles from the entrance to Palomar Mountain State Park.

The Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation into the remains. The county Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the person’s identity as well as the cause and manner of death. Authorities have not publicly identified the deceased person.

Brophy, 44, has been missing since July 6.

Investigators say she was seen at Harrah’s Resort Southern California in Valley Center that afternoon. Roughly 50 minutes later, she entered Palomar Mountain State Park, a place she was known to visit for hiking.

Later that evening, she failed to pick up her daughter from summer camp and did not report for her scheduled overnight shift at a Kaiser Permanente hospital in San Marcos.

A missing-person report was filed that night.

Three days later, investigators found her unoccupied Hyundai Kona in a parking area inside Palomar Mountain State Park.

But Brophy was nowhere to be found.

AN INTENSIVE SEARCH PRODUCED NO ANSWERS

Authorities have spent weeks searching the rugged mountain terrain.

Search-and-rescue personnel, police officers, canine teams, dive teams and other agencies have participated in the effort.

Teams searched areas around Doane Pond, trails, steep canyons and dense vegetation.

A California State Parks dive team also searched the pond, while additional targeted searches were conducted after detectives developed new investigative leads.

Despite those efforts, Brophy has not been located.

Her family and friends have also continued searching, including volunteer efforts in areas surrounding the state park.

The discovery on August 12 initially raised obvious concerns because of its proximity to the area where Brophy disappeared.

However, authorities quickly clarified that the remains are not believed to belong to her at this time.

The Sheriff’s Office is conducting a separate investigation into the death.

Officials have also said there is no known threat to the community connected to the discovery.

The remains were found in an embankment, and authorities have not publicly released details about the person’s identity or the circumstances surrounding the death.

WHY THE LOCATION MATTERS

The discovery is nevertheless significant because it occurred in the same broader mountain region that has been central to the search for Brophy.

Her vehicle was found inside the state park after she entered the area on July 6.

Investigators have previously said there is no evidence of foul play in Brophy’s disappearance at this point.

That means authorities have not publicly established that she was the victim of a crime, despite the unanswered circumstances surrounding her disappearance.

HER FAMILY IS STILL WAITING

Brophy’s family has remained involved in the search.

Her brother Ramon Fabregas previously described the continuing effort to locate his sister and said volunteers and relatives would keep searching.

The family has also expressed sympathy for the relatives of the person whose remains were discovered.

For Brophy’s loved ones, however, the central question remains unchanged:

Where is Angelica?

The discovery of another person’s remains does not answer that question.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office will work to identify the deceased person and determine how they died.

That investigation could take time.

Meanwhile, Oceanside police continue investigating Brophy’s disappearance and remain in contact with her family.

Anyone with information about Brophy’s whereabouts is being asked to contact Oceanside Police Detective Ryan Malone at 760-435-4537 or the department’s anonymous tip line at 760-435-4730.

THE MYSTERY REMAINS

One month after Angelica Brophy disappeared, investigators still do not have the answer her family desperately wants.

Her car was found.

Extensive searches were conducted.

New leads generated additional searches.

And now human remains have been discovered nearby—but authorities say they do not appear to be hers.

For investigators, two separate questions now remain:

Who was the person whose remains were discovered on Palomar Mountain?

And perhaps even more urgently for Brophy’s family:

What happened to Angelica Brophy after she entered the mountain area on July 6?

For now, both mysteries remain unresolved.

This report distinguishes confirmed information from speculation. The human remains have not been identified publicly, and authorities have not established a connection between those remains and Angelica Brophy’s disappearance.
