Lucy Letby Update: Where the Case Stands After Her 15 Whole-Life Sentences

Lucy Letby remains convicted of murdering seven babies and attempting to murder six others, with the convictions carrying 15 whole-life orders. Her legal team is continuing to challenge the case, but there has been no ruling overturning her convictions.

The Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) is currently reviewing Letby’s case file after her legal team submitted an application in February 2025. In February 2026, the CCRC confirmed that the review was still ongoing and said its decision would be based on the evidence rather than public pressure.

Importantly, the CCRC review does not mean Letby has been exonerated. No decision has been made to refer her case back to the Court of Appeal, and her existing convictions remain in force.

There have also been developments involving other allegations. In January 2026, the Crown Prosecution Service decided not to bring further charges against Letby relating to nine infants—two deaths and seven cases involving babies who survived health collapses. Cheshire Police said they were disappointed with the decision, while the CPS concluded that the evidence did not meet the required threshold for prosecution.

Meanwhile, the Cheshire Coroner opened inquests in February 2026 into the deaths of the five infants Letby was convicted of murdering. The main hearings are scheduled to resume in September 2026.

The case remains highly controversial, with Letby’s supporters and some experts arguing that aspects of the medical evidence presented at trial should be reconsidered. Prosecutors and police, however, continue to stand by the existing convictions.

For now, Letby’s convictions and whole-life sentences remain legally in force, while the CCRC review and coroner’s proceedings continue.
