Austin Metcalf Murder Case: Judge Turns Down Karmelo Anthony’s Request for Retrial

A judge has denied Karmelo Anthony’s request for a new trial in the case involving the fatal stabbing of Austin Metcalf.

The decision was issued on August 22, 2026, when retired Judge Michael Chitty rejected Anthony’s motion for a retrial.

Anthony had previously been convicted and sentenced to 35 years in prison in June 2026 for Metcalf’s killing, which occurred during a track-and-field meet in Frisco, Texas.

One issue raised by Anthony’s defense involved his decision not to testify at trial. Anthony had initially planned to take the witness stand but ultimately withdrew after his attorneys expressed concerns that prosecutors could introduce potentially damaging information about his past.

The defense argued that an understanding had existed to limit sensitive evidence involving both Anthony and Metcalf. Prosecutors disputed that interpretation and maintained that Anthony’s potential testimony was not covered by such an agreement.

The judge’s denial means Anthony will not receive a new trial based on the arguments presented in the motion. However, the ruling does not necessarily end his legal options, as his attorneys can continue pursuing available appeals.
