MISSING WOMAN FOUND ALIVE IN MEXICO MORE THAN A YEAR AFTER ABANDONING CAR AND TRAILER

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. — A missing-person case that left investigators searching for answers for more than a year has taken an unexpected turn after a Ukrainian woman was found alive in Mexico.

Ganna Kovrizhynkh, 39, also known as Angel Volnaya, disappeared in July 2025 while traveling across the United States. Her car and camper trailer were later discovered abandoned on private property in Potrero, California, near the U.S.-Mexico border.

For more than a year, her whereabouts remained unknown.

Now authorities say they have confirmed that Kovrizhynkh is alive and believe she voluntarily crossed into Mexico.

Ganna KovrizhynkhHER DISAPPEARANCE BEGAN WITH A DISTURBING MESSAGE

Kovrizhynkh was reported missing by a friend on July 12, 2025, after family and friends lost contact with her.

Her last known communication came several days earlier, on July 5.

According to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System, Kovrizhynkh sent her mother a photograph of a letter along with GPS coordinates pointing to an area in Potrero.

The letter reportedly contained instructions concerning her personal belongings and assets, raising immediate concerns among those who knew her.

Soon afterward, her Jeep Grand Cherokee and camper trailer were found abandoned near Potrero Park Drive.

But Kovrizhynkh herself was nowhere to be found.

INVESTIGATORS COULD NOT FIND HER

The discovery of an abandoned vehicle and trailer prompted an extensive investigation by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office.

Detectives followed numerous leads but were unable to determine where Kovrizhynkh had gone.

Because Potrero is relatively close to the Mexican border, investigators eventually considered the possibility that she had crossed into Mexico.

Authorities believed she may have entered Baja California through the Tecate area, although they initially had no confirmation of her location.

For her family, the uncertainty continued for more than a year.

Ganna KovrizhynkhTHEN CAME THE BREAKTHROUGH

The case finally changed on August 7, 2026, when investigators established contact with Kovrizhynkh.

Authorities subsequently verified her identity and determined that she was staying in Sinaloa, Mexico.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office said investigators believe she crossed the border voluntarily and emphasized that she was not considered to be in danger.

The Ukrainian Embassy has also been notified of her whereabouts.

That revelation transformed a mysterious missing-person investigation into a very different story.

WHY DID SHE LEAVE?

That remains one of the biggest unanswered questions.

Kovrizhynkh was traveling from Florida to California when she disappeared.

Authorities have not publicly explained why she abandoned her vehicle and trailer, why she crossed into Mexico or why she apparently chose not to contact her family for such an extended period.

The unsettling letter she sent to her mother before disappearing has only added to the mystery.

Investigators have not publicly said that anyone else was responsible for her disappearance.

Instead, authorities currently believe she made the decision to leave voluntarily.

SHE HAD BEEN TRAVELING ACROSS THE COUNTRY

Before disappearing, Kovrizhynkh had been on a cross-country journey.

Friends and family told investigators that she was traveling through the United States, eventually reaching Southern California.

Her abandoned Jeep and camper became the most important physical clues in the investigation.

But with no immediate indication of where she had gone, detectives faced the difficult task of tracing a person who appeared to have intentionally left her previous life behind.

THE CASE IS NOW TAKING A NEW DIRECTION

The discovery of Kovrizhynkh alive is an extraordinary outcome after more than a year of uncertainty.

But authorities still have unanswered questions about the circumstances surrounding her disappearance.

Why did she leave the vehicle?

Why did she cross into Mexico?

What happened between the time she abandoned the trailer and the moment investigators located her?

And perhaps most importantly, why did she remain out of contact with the people who had been searching for her?

For now, authorities have not released answers to those questions.

A MISSING-PERSON CASE WITH AN UNEXPECTED ENDING

Cases involving abandoned vehicles can quickly become deeply concerning for investigators, particularly when a person disappears without explanation.

In Kovrizhynkh’s case, the discovery of her vehicle and trailer initially created a mystery that lasted more than a year.

Now investigators know something they had spent months trying to establish:

She survived.

But knowing where she is does not necessarily explain why she disappeared.

Her story has gone from a missing-person investigation to a much larger mystery about what prompted her to leave her life in the United States behind.

More than a year after she vanished, Ganna Kovrizhynkh has been found alive in Mexico. Authorities believe she crossed the border voluntarily — but the reasons behind that decision remain unanswered.

And after a year of searching, the biggest mystery may no longer be where she went, but why she chose to disappear in the first place
